LEEP vs. Cone

I was recently diagnosed with CIN 3 - Carinoma in situ.
Colpscopy showed that my whole cervix is covered in abnormal cells. I have 4 Docs over my 'case'. They are having diffuculties agreeing on treatment. 2 say leep and 2 tell me cone. I am feeling more 'instinct' towards cone because the 2 doctors dont believe the LEEP will completly rid me of the abnormalities. Any help in how to decide "my fate" between LEEP and CONE? I have tried looking this up online but fail to find what I am needing as far as information goes. Please help..anythingis appricated. Posted on 03/04/09, 01:03 pm |

Hello, Jenn. Welcome to this caring group! I would hope that these four specialists will continue to put their collective heads together and come up with a consensus of opinion, and no doubt they will. In the meantime, I'm glad you're advocating for yourself in researching your options. I am here to support you in any way I can, as I am sure the other good women on this site will as well.
My particular situation was different from yours. My cancer was IB staging when discovered, and I was offered the choice of radiation or radical hysterectomy. The conization for me was a diagnostic tool. I have never had a LEEP. God bless.

Thank you for the warm welcome.. My Main concern is that 2 of the docs say with the leep there is only a 10% chance of recovery and 90% that at my stage it will move further into cancer if it is not already. The other 2 docs only want to do Leep b/c they "feel uncomfortable doing this procedure to an unsterilized woman." I cannot get them to understand that I dont want more kids. I have 2 boys 4 & 6, My Boyfriend has a girl 9, and has a vascetomy!!! I cannot change docs b/c I have no medical ins. and I am under the hospital charity program. I am only 22 so I believe they are looking at me as a "young adult who doesn't know if she wants more kids" type. I was married at 15 got divorced 4 years later. Have an AHS in Med. Assisting and a BAS in IT & Networking. I cannot stress to them enough about not wanting more kids. I even stated they could tie my tubes and then give me the cone if it would ease their minds!! I feel as if I am at a BREAKING POINT in this.. And it seems their only concern is my ability to carry a child. :(( Any advice on how to make them listen...

I think you should have the right to make a treatment choice. It's obvious that the docs are concerned about the legalities concerning your young age. Could this be brought before an Ethics Committee? Not sure exactly how to go about that, but I think your point of view should be considered & weighed. Just a thought.

Hi there, I have a few comments that may help. I was 24 when diagnosed and within a month I had a cone done. it rid me of the cancer completly in one shot. There was never a concern about sterility or children. I was told that it didn't decrese the chances that badly that it was worth not doing it. quite honestly i'm appauled at your doctors need to put you having children above you having cancer. Having a cone biopsy done does not sterilize you. regardless of if you intend on having more children it is possible. I went on to have a beautifull healthy baby girl. I would say that they can't do a leep on you if you say no. continue telling them that you want the cone and get some facts about cone biopsies and pregnancies. even though you have said you didn't want more children. if you give them facts about it maybe that will shut them up. I wish you the best of luck. i hope all goes well.
