CP and the Workplace

Good morning everyone. Thanks for the replies to challenges in the classroom.
I would like to ask now and would appreciate any feedback about challenges in the workplace or challenges in trying to get a job. What are the attitudes of employers and employees towards people with disabilities? For those of you working, is it a positive environment/experience.....are necessary accommodations put in place? Any feedback or insights would be very much appreciated.
Thanks so much for your time.

" "What are the attitudes of employers and employees towards people with disabilities?" when I was going on job interviews, I found that most employers did not take me seriously, even though I did not disclose my CP on the application.
"is it a positive environment/experience" for the most part yes. the only person that knows about my CP is my manager and from the comments by other employees that don't know I have CP, when i trip or walk into a wall or drop stuff, I know who is ignorant and unaccepting. "

" Hi Vicki.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Will your work place make accommodations for you.......isn't that the law that they are make accommodations that enable you to do your job? "

" Hi bcas1971

That must have been tough going to interviews knowing what the reaction from employers could be. It shows that there is still a long way to go for people to be non judgemental......rather than assume something is wrong, treat everyone with respect and dignity and choose the best person for the job.......it is tough. I glad to hear your job is good and you are right you can pick out the ones that would be more accepting and supporting than others. Thanks for your input.....have a great day!

Hi megaboopeggy

Your family is right but I am sure it is easier said than done.....so, you do tell people at work that you have CP? If you don't mind me asking, how did the interview process go for you? Once you were hired, do your employers make any necessary accommodations to help with daily work load........or do you require any accommodations? I am just wondering how receptive the employer is to "accommodating? Thanks so much..........have a great day. "

" Hi evryone,

back 2 what bcas1971 was saying, I didn't relize this till he said it, employer's DON'T take You seriouusly when the think something is wrong with You. Well anyway, at my kast job (4 a fitness and wellness center) Little acomadation's were made, It seemed like they were descrinonating agaist me cuz of the disability, but no one told me because it would look bad for them, They would be violating the ADA law, That job only lasted 2 yr's anyway, I didn't really much care 4 it anyway

The job b4 that I worked 4 aramark @ W,CU (WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY) I worked there 4 7 yrs
The first five yrs were great, never had a problem, the last two yr's were hell They brought in a more complex machine a thouvh srenn, and with my hands when I pressed one button I would accidently hit 2 or3, I kept on asking 4 a computer mouse, But, they wouldn't acomadate me. So, I quit\
and they kept on cutting my hours. Later on I found out they were trying to get rid of me. "
