Today Jackie was told he has mixed cp not spastic. What will this mean for him long term? He can crawl, he gets out of his bed and get get into Maddies we see improvments the doc didnt sound very positive. She said some of his movements like in his gait trainer that he isnt trying to move it like he should but it was a vounteer move. Whatever I say she said his brain is not telling him to walk.

don't let the doctors tell you what the baby can and cannot do. they will find their own way of doing things, just be supportive.

I completely agree with bcas1971. My son has cp, diagnosed @ 5 months, now 8 yr old; able (due to pure determination) to ice skate, plays hockey (not well, but LOVEs it), runs, rides his bike w/ training wheels, shoots basketball, and just started self defense classes w/ his sister. A child will try anything...so keep introducing things to the child. You (parents/grandparents/care givers) are the child's cheerleaders, so keep on cheering the child on!!! Your positive influence is what the child feeds off of for life's accomplishments. If it were not for my Mom, sister and both brothers continually encouraging me to "do" and "encourage" w/ Lucas, then he would not be the outgoing, 'try anything' kind of kid. His neurologist, physiatrist (doc physical therapy), chiropractor, osteopathic, OT, PT, eye doc & dentist are ALWAYS happy to see him because he continues to "wow" them w/ what he had accomplished.

Every little thing he does new we make a big deal out of. He is also deaf and wears Cochaler Implants I feel this is some play in it. The other day he was moving hies gait trainer and the dr said it was involunetry movements his btain is not telling him to do that. How does she know what his brain is telling him? Dont all babies start walking in walkers starting put not knowing what to do?

your absolutely right about the "walkers", all children learn to walk with one.
walking is just a series of falling and catching yourself with the other leg.

how old is he? And by mixed CP do you mean he fluctuates from high to low tone? If you give me a little more information i may be able to tell you more things about his long term development

He is 3 and a half. They said some of his movments are involuntary. He has just started using a gait triner and they say that when it moves he is not doing it on purpose it's due the involuntary movements.

I'm a 17 year old who was born with cp. I'm living proof that the doctors don't always know everything. They told my parents I would never walk or even survive for that matter. I was born 3 months premature. I started walking late in life and never crawled as a child because at the time I couldn't use my legs. Through the help of physical therapy and a ton of determination I can do a lot more then anyone ever said I could. Granted my gait isn't perfect but it works for me and I manage to get around just fine.

Doctors can be wrong. I think they are trying to be as honest as possible with what they know though.
My son is 9 years old and was diagnosed with spastic diplegia at 3 years 4 months! He didn't start walking until he was almost 3, didn't start talking until almost 3 1/2. Do not give up! Kids take their cues from us! If we are told they can't do it and we think they can't, guess what? they won't! Always talk positive around him. The doctors could be right, but not always. I will keep you in my prayers!
