Discussion:
Anxiety and CP?

I was just wondering if anyone else has anxiety do to Cp? By anxiety, which I have not exactly been diagnosed with, I mean being edgy. My entire life I have always been easily startled; that feeling when someone jumps up behind you and scares you and you jump.

Only with me, it occurs even when it is not neccessary to occur, I get startled over the littlest, dumbest things. Its really hard to explain but for situations that dont call for being jumpy, I always am.

So I was wondering if I am not alone, if anyone can recomend a possible treatment perhaps? Maybe it has something to do with spasticity?

I have told my parents many times, asked doctors and a psychiatrist about it, but none of them seem to believe there's anything wrong with me, I just feel like they dont get it. It sucks to be so easily startled and I dont get why I am this way..

" Wow! I am new to this, just diagnosed last month and I do this too. How about jumping even when you know someone is coming? You expect it and jump anyway?

Yes I am naturally very anxious..... noisy and or crowded places really bother me "

" It has been so interesting reading everyones reply's. My daughter is 10 and has always had a hieghtened startle reflex. Its so bad that you have to talk to her down the hallway before you enter the room she is in to keep her from jumping out of her skin when you enter the room and start talking all of a sudden. She is terrified to go to the movies and hates 4th of July (Fireworks). Her Father tries to force her to do these things (tells her not to be a baby-jerk!!) But this is a real physical response not mental. And after hearing from you all, I'm convinced. I always thought that it might have something to do with pre-mature birth. She was 16wks early. Her sensory system actually finished developing after birth, in a noisy NICU unit instead of a quiet womb. Were you all premature also? "

" I was born premature. Not sure what kind of CP I have, but yeah, the jumping thing is a real issue. I can just *barely* tolerate going to the movies. And it seems over the last couple of years, movies have gotten louder. I love music, but I know I'd never be able to attend a concert without plugging my ears the entire time, wincing in pain. It actually hurts, and when I tell others (without CP) about this, they kind of just give me an odd look.

SO glad I came upon this discussion. It's nice to know I'm not alone in this! For the longest time I've been trying to figure out if it was due to my anxiety, or just the fact that I have CP.

MRice - Your husband shouldn't force your daughter to participate in "loud" activities like setting off fireworks, as you mentioned, because I'm betting the sounds are very painful for her. "

" I was born 2 months premature. I just got a job after 2 years not working due to family issues and the economy. It's hard trying to deal with the anxiety, mild CP at a new job where it's so busy! I've done it many times before and now again... "
