I am a current student in the Educational Assistant program and I am working on a project for CP and was wondering if anyone had some information about the role of the EA with their child. If yes, was an EA helpful with your child's learning whether it was academics, social, life skills, etc. What do you see being the biggest challenges for children with CP in school. I hope to become an Educational Assistant and I know I will be dealing with children that have CP so any information is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much for your time.

I had educational aids some what like reading aid and home work aid yes they were helpful they were one on one and I also saw them with other students they can be helpful but sometimes not it depends on your focus back whenI was in high school they were beginning the whole incursion movement even for people with cognitive disabilities I saw very good aids I saw aids that would rather socialize with other aids and highschool students then work with their student those students did not get or learn anything from the class but when I was partners with a student and his aid in food class he was measuring leveling off stiring plus washing hands before he cooked he is learning valuable life skills along side of peers who are well learning more sophisticated life skills if his ea socialized and let him sit there he wouldn't have learned anything

Hi Vicki. Thanks for your input. You are absoutely right, an EA or Aide cannot just sit and socialize.....I really hope that the EA's today are more helpful than that.......I am hoping to use computer assitive technology to help student who may have physical or vision problems......I want to learn what assitive devices would work best......realizing that each child is different and has different needs but I hope I would be able to be an advocate for the child and make sure all of his needs are met. Your right about the life skills......students need to do/be active not just watch, in order to learn about different things.........is there anything else you can think of that was helpful to get you through the school years.
Again, thanks for you reply as it will be very helpful.

Hi all!! l'm a 57 yr old g-pa with a 'weak' L side. l dont believe youngsters are different in the early grades than when l was a student. Assibility wasnt a word then Kids teased, helped, bullied or wondered if l was mentally handicapped. My dad assured me l prolly would need to be a janitor or like it . Mom assured me l could do anything. I believe it would be a good start for anyone w/ authority &/or opportunity to explain when a child has questions. l may look scary to a 5 or 6 yr old.
l have feelings also & this (disabilities) has made me more sympathetic to others that has them. Teske??tape ur lesser- used hand to your body & go shopping by bus for about 2 hours & You'll prolly learn more than U will in this group!! Comments anyone?? God Bless
