My little girl is being reviewed for Spinal dorsal rhizotomy surgery. If she is accepted, our insurance will not cover out of state surgery. Does anyone have any ideas how we can raise $40,000? Are there organizations that give grants?

" Hi,

My son, Colton, is 9 years old with spastic diplegia cerebral palsy.

First let me ask...have you done the SDR (selective dorsal rhizotomy) surgery?

Find a place in Minnesota to do the surgery!!! Once your child is in the state they cover everything!!! We were debating on to go to Missouri or Minnesota and my son's doctor helped us by telling us about medical insurance in Minnesota. No pre-approvals or anything. They cover it all.

I don't know of any organization that gives grants for surgery, but we did a car wash for when my son was going to be in the hospital. The money we raised helped us pay for my meals while he was in the hospital. We also went to our church and ended up putting a flier in with the bulletin passed out at church and it just stated what we were going through and that we needed help. We raised enough money for me to not have to worry about eating while up there! lol.

Please feel free to email me to chat more about this...mommie2codybug@aol.com

God Bless,

Brenda "

" Hi,

I forgot to let you know, we ended up not doing the SDR for our son. We did the baclofen trial to see if he would qualify for the surgery. He did, but the question remained..Would we be able to strengthen his little legs? If not he would be in a wheelchair forever.

We opted with the baclofen pump since it's less invasive, we can slow down his dosage at any time and put some of the spasticity back in his legs if needed, not a very long recovery time compared to SDR surgery.

God Bless,

Brenda "

" yes, she had SDR with Dr. Park 2 weeks ago. Everything went well. she is recovering nicely, but it is a lot work. It takes a lot of PT to correct bad habits of still toe walking.
Thanks for the advice. We started a fundraiser in our home town and it spread like wild fire. Within 3 months we raised enough money for the surgery! Our community was amazing. We are very blessed and very thankful. "
