Just received a alert from my daughter who has joined a blog for Celiacs on Facebook. Someone posted that Breyers Ice Cream was recalled because some tubs contained undeclared WHEAT!. Just wanted to share this info. May be able to find out more on the Breyers Site (is they have one).

" He is the statement I found on their site. It is only two of their flavors and it is pretty easy to know that these two do contain wheat because of the COOKIES. But they failed to list WHEAT in their ingredients.

Englewood Cliffs, NJ, October 22, 2009 –Unilever United States, Inc., of Englewood Cliffs, NJ, in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), is voluntarily recalling a limited number of tubs of Breyers®ice cream because it was mispackaged and may contain undeclared wheat. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of allergic reaction if they consume this product.

On a limited number of tubs, the lid describes the product as “Breyers®All Natural Cookies & Cream” ice cream, and the tub portion of the package describes the product as “Breyers®All Natural Mint Chocolate Chip” ice cream. The product inside of the tub is “All Natural Cookies & Cream.” The ingredient statement on the tub does not declare wheat, which is an ingredient of the Cookies & Cream product.

The mispackaged ice cream productwas distributed in Alabama, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Trinidad and Virginia through retail stores in these locations and adjoining areas. The affected product is being recalled from consumers and retailer store shelves, back rooms and warehouses.

The affected mispackaged product was distributed in 1.5-quart (1.41L)paperboard tubs marked with UPC # 077567254245 located on the side of the tub and in combination with “Best If Used By” dates of FEB1711GH, FEB1811GH and FEB1911GH located on the bottom of the tub.

The allergy alert and recall relates only to the above mentioned mispackaged Breyers®ice cream. No other Breyers®ice cream products are affected.

No adverse reactions have been reported to date. In addition to working in cooperation with the FDA, the company is also issuing an alert through the Food Allergy & Anaphylaxis Network.

The recall was initiated after the company received a few consumer complaints about the mispackaged product. It was determined that product containing wheat was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat in the ingredient list on the tub.

Consumers who have purchased the mispackaged Breyers®ice cream with UPC # 077567254245 and in combination with “Best If Used By” dates of FEB1711GH, FEB1811GH and FEB1911GH are urged to discard it immediately and contact the company at 1-877-270-7402for a full refund. For consumers outside the United States, please send an email tocomments.breyers@unilever.com for a full refund. "

" I always buy the Blue Bell ice cream for myself. The ingredients are clearly listed. I eat the Homemade vanilla, Strawberry and Butter Pecan. Stay away from any cookie and cake flavors. Also the chocolate has gluten. I am very sensitive with DH. I have no problems with this ice cream. Many ice creams are GF. Just read the labels. It is obvious that cookies and cream, birthday cake flavor and cookie dough flavor. is not gluten free. It has cookies or cake in it. I could handle this disease without my Hersheys and my ice cream. Ha Ha!!!

Hope you find a ice cream and really enjoy it. "

" I remember back in 1991, the list of GF foods only included Howard Johnsons ice cream as positively GF, but most HJ's were long gone by then, even the ice cream was hard to find in retail stores.
Always read the label - but lots of icecream is GF, in upstate NY, we have a convenience shop called Stewarts, they make their own icecream, and as long as it doesn't have cookies or cake/brownies in it, it's GF, even the chocolate.
good luck, you'll find something "

" Haagan Daz ice cream is safe providing it's one of the basic flavors like vanilla or chocolate. They don't use preservatives or flavor enhancers. The vanilla and chocolate have about six ingredients period. Or you can buy an ice cream maker and make it yourself, that way you know what's in it. It's not hard to make a basic ice cream. "

" i think it's called purely decadent or pure decadence. It contains soy but is gluten & dairy free and even has Cookie Dough and Snickerdoodle versions. Love it. Cookie dough is less soy, as that flavor is made with coconut milk. "

" Hi, I'm also allergic to milk protein. I eat soy-delicious in Vanilla. It's pretty good. So is the coconut ice cream but high calorie.
Trikker "
