gluten free on a budget??

Does anyone have any tips for eating gluten free on a budget? My fiancee is currently sponsoring me for permanent residence here in Canada and we're on an incredibly tight budget. I know GF products tend to be pricey (and incredibly hard to get in my area without ordering from a catalog, which is more expensive than I can afford) so that's not exactly what I'm looking for. Just... things that are cheap and good. Thanks!

" When I first started I just ate everything I usually did but without gluten...ummm... like if I wanted a tuna fish sandwich, I would cut up onions and add tuna and mayo and just eat it out of a bowl.

But when you go shopping remember to look at ingredients all the time, on the tuna can..on the mayo jar..but as much as I looked for the ingredients on the onion I couldn't find any listed...lol...

Seriously tho... you have to check everything. "

" Hi! For just regular foods that are gf,and if you can eat anything else, I recommend corn tortillas for the bread substitute, egg dishes like omelettes, stir fry, chicken or egg salad, chili, dried bean soups, Coco Pebbles in the U.S are gf (not sure about Canada-check it out) Cream of rice cooked cereal, potato dishes. I recommend checking out recipes on the internet and adapting them. Some mixes are more economical than buying the flours and making from scratch. I also recommend HIGHLY Roben Ryberg's book-The Gluten Free Kitchen-all the recipes are with cornstarch and potato starch-cheap,easy to find ingredients and the recipes are good and easy. You will have to get the xanthan gum or guar gum, but a teeny little bit is all you need and it lasts for a long time. I have a bag I bought six months ago and it is over half full still. You use only 1/2-1 tsp average for a recipe. Keep it in the fridge and it will last a long, long time. Good luck and take care. (Keep us posted on how you are doing) "

" And it's a pity we don't have Cocoa Pebbles in Canada, cause that's my favorite breakfast cereal! lol I posted last night out of desperation because I feel that if I eat one more egg or potato I'm going to turn into one. I'm working my way through The Gluten-Free Bible and I have a few other books waiting on me at the library, including the one that was mentioned. I think that as I learn more and I realize there is more to life than bread I'll begin to feel better. Thanks all for your great suggestions! "
