Hi everyone.
I was born with cataracts, and I got them removed when I was in third grade. My cataracts were attached to the lenses in my eyes, which are the things that basically make you see clearly instead of blurry. So they had to remove those too. They did one eye at a time, and I had to wear this huge patch over my eye. My doctor was nice and made my patch pink, but I was sooo nervous when I had to go back to school with the patch. When I got there, my whole class had on really dorky glasses and eye patches, even the teacher did. This wasn't to make fun of me, but they had a banner up and it was all to make me not feel like the odd one out. So the class all wore these until I could get it removed. It was so sweet and that was my favorite teacher EVER. But now, I am 23 years of age and when I got them removed back then they told me that I would have to have another surgery when I was like 20 or 21 to put lense implants in my eyes. I currently wear huge bifocal glasses and contacts, but my contacts aren't strong enough for my prescription because they don't make them as high as I need them. So I am pretty much screwed because I literally only see REALLY blurry. Can't read or see ppls faces, usually just see colors all splashed together. But here is what I am wondering -- my insurance won't cover it now. It is seen as cosmetic. And my parents don't want to help pay for it because I can "wear contacts and glasses". but I am sick of the HUGE bifocals and tired of not seeing good enough with my contacts. what do I do? Thanks... Posted on 11/08/08, 12:11 pm |

Hi,
Who told you that it wasn't covered? Was it your surgeon, or did you go directly to your insurance company? A lot of times, what is and what is not covered by medical insurance comes down to how the doctor's code it when they submit it to the insurance company, so you might try again, or try a different surgeon. Good luck, Jeff

Cataracts are a clouding of the lense of the eye, so basically they removed the lense of your eye. They do have lense implant surgery now for that.
I was born with scar tissue around my eyes, and they treated it with multiple cataract surgeries over the years. They say it was like trying to cut a tire with a butter knife. I was born totally blind, then after 9 needling surgeries in the 1970's, they got my vision up to 20/200, but then after 7 lazer surgeries within this past decade, I came down with Glaucoma, which is deteriorating my optic nerve, making me totally blind again.

I was born with cataracts. I had the first when I was a child and wore a strong contact. The second one I had a lens implant put in after they removed the cataract. I wanted to be able to see in the middle of the night to care for my children. I had an implant put in the other eye. It was the best thing I have done! I was able to see so much better. I could go swimming and see! I could get up at night and see! I have fine tuning with glasses to read.
