Aren't I a bit young for this? What ELSE causes cataracts? The doc says its because of my inhaler but I have a friend that has been on inhalers for years and she doesn't have them!

" I was born with a cataract. Yes, I'm one of the rare ones. In 1972, when I was two years old, they removed the lens: not much of an option. The technology for cataract replacements and surgeries has come a long ways since those days.

I am essentially blind in that eye now. With no lens, I see only light and colors and motion. I use it as a really bad peripheral vision, but it is of course, impossible to focus on anything with no lens.

Why would a new born have a cataract? Somethings we just don't have answers for yet. "

" My mom had Rubella while she was pregnant with me. Was born with many eye conditions, but basically, was born with cataracts in both eyes.

I was completely blind until 18 months. Then from 18 months, to 9 years of age, I had my lens removed and 9 needling operations.

later in my life, around 25-26, they tried the Lazer treatments on me, but after that much time had passed, a membrane grew around the cataracts, which they cannot remove with the lazers.

They tried 6 lazer treatments on me, and could hardly scratch the surface. I remembered my mom telling me, the needling surgeries I had when I was a baby were like trying to cut a tire with a butter knife the doctor said. hehe.

Anyway, the 6 lazer treatments after awhile, gave me glaucoma, and am now loosing the rest of my sight slowly from that.

I had up to 20/160 in both eyes all thru my teenage years, then the glaucoma dropped my sight down to 20/300 in right, "2 fingers a 2 feet" in left. I lost my job around that same time because I could no longer read or see to get around at work.

I use special speech software for the computer thats how I'm able to type here, but I am also going to college, going for a bachelors in Business and Data Communications. "

" i developed cataracts at age 45..they were very severe and had to come out immediately as i was nearly blind and didn't even realize it..my dr said young people cataracts was caused by diabetes or steroid use in most cases.. well i have never been on steroids.. and i am not diabetic.. he suggested i see an endocrinologist as i have symptoms of hormonal imbalance too...there are some systemic illness that will cause cataracts..as well as smoking, alcohol,, and being overweight...so i dont know.. good luck !
