Walking along the ocean surf
I look down and see a seashell of great beauty and perfection
resting in the sand
I reach down and pull it out of the sand
only to find
that it's beauty is flawed
it is not as it appears on the surface
for the remainder of it is stuck in the sand

WHY BADSTUFF HAPPENS

If it weren't for my beautiful sad mother
drinking a beaker of cold cyanide when I was three,
I wouldn't have learned
she could both love and abandon me
in one hot severe breath.

Maybe, but
It's more than fatigue:
The calendar is beckoning
Time is running out
Allergies are niggling
Food is tasteless but insidious
Clothes are too tight
Family is a burden
Never to be shrugged
Feet are blocks in concrete
And hands are traitors
