Peace Corps? Military?

I've done a lot of research on the military. It has a lot of benefits. But I don't want to be tied down to something I may or may not want for myself in the end. And I definitely don't want to go on a tour to Iraq.. I'm starting to consider the Peace Corps. Pretty much the opposite. haha. I'm looking for meaning in this life. And the only real satisfaction I get in life is when I help people. Help. Can anyone get me some info or personal experiences in the Peace Corps? I've already been to their website. And this link helped me figure out some stuff. I just want to serve. I know the military is a good option with tons of benefits. I just don't feel comfortable being on a permanent contract. Well.. Peace Corps is 2 years. And military is 4 years of active and 4 of inactive. And the potential of a draft. So yeah.. The peace corps seems like a better option at the moment. Because I definitely do not want to be in iraq. I've seen people that come back from there and they are completely different. I wouldn't want that for myself. And neither would my family and friends. That's why I think the peace corps would be good for me. It would allow me to mature and grow as a person and have the chance to be on my own.. Not to mention, make me a fulfilled person in general. I love helping people. So anyway.. Any info is much appreciated!!! Thanks!

" Why don't youwant to go to Iraq? You may have the wrong idea about the military. As far as benefits and stability, military is the way to go. You can try be a reservist instead of going directly to active duty. FYI the four years inactive duty is in place so there will never be a draft. You are right about the contract though, but it is quite exhilirating to be able to travel and on your own. There are organizations othe than peace corps and military. You can go border patrol, the benifits are simliar to the military but your not on a contract. You will figure it out, but dont be afraid to try things, because you never know. You alsomay have to comprimise, depending on what your looking for. Hope this helps. "

" A family member just got back from the Peace Corp not too long ago.

So yeah.. it's a 2 year committment + 3 additional months in prep. work. Total=27 months. $6K given upon return. All expenses paid while abroad.

You don't get a choice in your country of assignment. Meaning that you could be stationed in breathtaking Costa Rica or war-torn Somalia. Just using these two countries as an example.

It is generally frowned upon to reject the assignment in the event you are selected to serve in a less then desirable place. You will most likely not be reassigned again.

The Marines will be the first to come in and get you in the event of a war.. or crisis situation.

If you speak a second languge= a huge bonus.

Can't have recent bankruptcies, major health issues, and food issues. And of course.. criminal background check.

Oh and currently there's about a 14 month wait for the PC application process.. I guess a lot of people are applying!

AND It looks excellent on a resume/CV!

Hope that helps on the PC front! "
