I've been working as a medical transcriptionist from home for at least 15 years. Unfortunately because of new software and insurance requirements I'm finding it harder and harder to find work. I've looked into national transcription agencies but for a number of reasons feel this wouldn't be a good alternative for me.

So here I am, kissing 50 with what I feel is a very limited skill set. I'm great at what I do but while some of it is transferable (medical terminology, I suppose, and I type like the wind) I'm missing a lot of office skills, etc. I'm also going to have to find something part-time or evenings - single mom over here and while the kids are older they're not old enough to be left alone every day after school. After working at home for so long I'm not even sure how to make this all work logistically.

Anyone out there been through this kind of shift? Any suggestions?

" I've been looking into school and I see that they have a very short turn around time for getting going with medical office tech skills. "

" While I am not in your shoes per se, I have been a stay-at-home mom for the most part for the last 17 years. I have a college degree, however my "office/computer" skills are not really that great, so I am looking into attending a local Tech Center in the area for adults. I don't know if there is a tech ctr like that near you, but the one by me has various sorts of certifications it offers (takes approx. 9 months to complete) for those of us that have been out of high school at least 2 years, and looking into either a career change, or like me to brush up on office skills and to help me find a job once I do go back to full time work, which will be in the next year. Best of luck! "

" Maybe you should go back to school. Perhaps the online courses. "

" Was a commercial lawyer till 50. Then thought I could retrain as a teacher, took courses post graduate school. But there are no jobs for over 50+ I MEAN NO JOBS. Only self employment is possible. Mixed self employment mixture of jobs and income streams. Good luck to us both. "
