I'm a bilingual librarian with good research and basic microsoft computer skills and I'm getting tired of dealing with the general public. I'd much prefer working in a college/university library or for a non-profit organization that pays well. I'm eyeing courses in health information management and also information architecture. Online course options from reputable colleges would great too.
I guess I'm just having trouble finding a lucrative and enjoyable field that requires minimal interaction with the general public and doesn't require me to take out an enormous student loan to pursue; I've already done that for two master's degrees. I am open to other fields as well- but it seems really tough to get started making 75K+. I'm currently earning in the low 60s, and don't think it would make sense to go back to school to earn anything less than 75K... Posted on 07/10/12, 05:38 pm |

Know what you mean about the public. But it's hard finding jobs out here, less known with the salary range your're looking for. Therefore, if you change careers, don't expect that money will follow. Do it for the love of your new career. I did it and am happier. Still, I haven't come anywhere near what I used to make.

Have you thought about trying for a university health sciences library position. Have a friend who does that, still requires people contact, but not as big a hassle as dealing with the general public at large.

Hi Bill W. Nothing has really changed - still at the same job that irritates me in various ways, but I do have a mortgage to pay. I try to remind myself that my hourly rate doesn't change with how much or little I like my supervisor or people who come into the library. I've found a few new niche websites that have interesting positions posted, but it's all about the money. If' I'm earning in the 60s - doesn't make sense to leave for much less than 70K.

Tommy - a little food for thought here. What's the price of your satisfaction? If a salary-lateral move makes you happier, is it worth the move to you?
I had an opportunity a few years ago to make a move that would have meant a bump in income. I'll admit I gave it serious thought. At the end though, I knew that I'd have more frustrations then I do now. I remembered a life in a similar position and knew I didn't want that again. In the end, the money just wasn't worth it. If you could make a lateral move into something stable but you know would make you happier, would it be worth it to you?

Needtoreboot-unfortunately I have yet to have an offer at or above my current salary level. The job market sucks &will continue to for some time. Sure I might leave for something that paid the same if it were secure &better overall, but so far-nothing has materialized.
