Women and Heart Attacks

We are all aware that female heart attacks are different. We rarely have the same symptoms as males. The female symptoms are more subtle in the beginning. The information below was taken from an RN’s experience with her MI (Myocardial infarction) We all know that COPD brings even more stress to the heart and I think we can use a refresher whenever possible. The below is not in an article but was taken from an email message that I received.
“At 10:30 pm , I was relaxing in my lazy boy, reading. I started feeling the awful sensation of indigestion. The sensation of having swallowed food too fast and you get up and get a glass of water to try to wash it down. Then you happen to remember, You hadn’t eaten since 5:00pm It seemed to subside but the next sensation was like squeezing motions that seemed to race up my SPINE. (probably aorta spasms). Gaining speed, the spasms continued racing up and under my breastbone. The process continued on into my throat and branched out into both jaws. I realized that I must be having a heart attack!!” The next steps she took are so important. 1. Get to a phone, Call the paramedics. Do Not attempt to drive yourself to the ER nor allow anyone in the home to drive you. Do Not call your doctor. That will be done after you are treated in your emergency situation. The paramedics have something that you need ASAP. Oxygen!!!!! 2. Unlock door to entry that will be used by paramedics. 3. Lie down on the floor by the entryway so they could see you immediately upon entry. As soon as she lay down, she lost consciousness. She could only remember parts of conversation as she was put in the ambulance and taken into surgery where she had 2 stents placed in the right coronary artery. I might add that someone gave a link to input your medications, etc and print out for a quick reference (I think it was Idozy). I have an index card with my name address phone # all contacts and names, Primary , Pulmonologist and the hospital of preference address and phone numbers on the front and on the back the list ad dosage of all medications, including the vitamin supplements I take. This I carry in my purse and another is on the entryway table where medical personnel can see it as they enter. Posted on 11/08/09, 02:11 pm |

Wonderful information... The way this gal approached her medical emergency is terrific! What a cool-headed individual. And, yes, my mother-in-law's heart attach she thought was simply indigestion or the "flu". Something we all need to remember... recognize the symptoms.
Thanks for potsing this, Anna...

I dont think Ive ever experienced a heart attack. I know this afternoon I had these little chest pains, and later I felt sweaty but my back and front where my lungs were felt cold. My muscles in my arms starting hurting like when I first got sick from lack of 02. I had forgotten to take my anxiety pill this aftrnoon though, so I took it, and tried to lie down a while, i also turned my machine 02 up to a little over 3 instead of at 2 1/2....seemed to help....although Im not sure i am suppose to have my 02 level that high, it did seem to help though.
