A new study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine April 17th 2007 will make news Im sure
Here are the highlights: 1) Pts with COPD were treated with either a) spiriva (tiotropium) alone b) spiriva + a steroid (salmeterol) c) spiriva + advair (which is a combo of a steroid and a long acting bronchodilator) 2) 449 patients with moderate or severe COPD were studied 3) Conclusions: the addition of ADVAIR to SPIRIVA did not influence rates of COPD exacerbation but DID improve lung function, quality of life, and hospitalization rates in patients with moderate to severe COPD Have we found the magic combination? It would be nice to find one that improves mortality from COPD but at least this is a regimen that seems to improve quality of life! Dr O. Posted on 04/27/07, 10:04 pm |

Arlene:
The study was funded by a Grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Ontario Thoracic Society (Dr Shawn Aaron is the principle author). THIS STUDY WAS NOT FUNDED BY THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY. Im not sure if youd have access to the full text online but www.annals.org you can search it to find the abstract at least. Hope this helps Dr O.

I have tried Spiriva twice w/hardly any change. I have taken Albutueral (in the past-now xopenex), atrovent, and pulmicort inhalers for several years. I tried dropping the atrovent inhaler and replaced it w/Spiriva; but again I actually was sob each time. Is it because I am used to one regiment for so many years? I also use oxygen (8-l0LM) 24/7...

MamaMarg:
I have noticed from other people on other groups that one has to give Spiriva a couple of months; depending on the individual. I use my inhalers four times per day and have for a long, long time. Am leary of people that claim the first week of taking Spiriva they stop taking their other inhalers and start running up hills; almost to the point of them saying ; no longer need oxygen. (and yet I have seen this on other sites).

I was on albuterol and spiriva for a few months and wasn't doing well at all. They added advair to the mix and I felt like I got a new lease on life. I have severe COPD and my days are so up and down. I still do have to use the albuterol rescue inhaler daily. I'm trying to get over a cold maybe that's why. I am able to work a fulltime job @ 11 hrs a day 4 days a week and those medications are allowing that to happen. I don't require oxygen.
