Oxygen

I'm confused after reading a recent post. Why do some people with an FEV1 of, for example, 46% have to be on oxygen and others with the same FEV1 don't have to be?

" Good question, I can't answer but I have noticed the same thing and the answers should be interesting.
My FEV1 is 27% and I use 2L of 02 at night only. "

" I can't really answer that question either, however I am sure it depends on the oxygen concentration in each persons blood...or, their saturation. "

" mamaloo,
FEV/FEV1 doesn't determine the need for oxygen. Your ABG or the amount of (or lack of) oxygen in your blood does. Which is done by an ABG blood test or Pulse Oximeter testing. "

" Hi,
my FEV1 is 23% and I am on oxygen set at o2
24/7. When I am sitting or resting it always is at about 96 or 97 on my oxxxxxxxxximeter. When I stand up and move around it drops down to about 90. So, I always wonder why I am on it 24/7. "

" To answer your question Katie,

* Forced expiratory volume (FEV). This measures the amount of air you can exhale with force in one breath. The amount of air you exhale may be measured at 1 second (FEV1), 2 seconds (FEV2), or 3 seconds (FEV3). FEV1 divided by FVC can also be determined.

We have quite a few good articles on this in the Emphysema/COPD Education Group. "

" this is an interesting post! surprisingly. i hadn't realized that different fev1 levels were assigned oxy! mine is 18%. i thought the abg was for the artery blood gases. i thought that was the amount of co2 in your blood. i know mine is too high, at 57%. i'm on oxy, 24/7 at 2.5 at total rest...but when walking, it's at 5.

" Thank you all for your advice, I did find it useful but must admit I still don't understand all I know about this disease. Probably never will but will continue to try. "
