We have thrush!

Just got back from the doc's office for the Sora's check-up. (She's three weeks old now) And discovered we have thrush. I've BF all of my children, Sora is our fourth and never had thrush before. I was a little supicious that we had it but wasn't sure as all I had to go on was what I had read about it. I was wondering does anyone know if thrush bothers babies? Are there any symptoms related to feeding? I was wondering because I know my breasts are more tender than usual, hurts when she nurses (one side more than the other) And Sora has seemed fussier this week. I thought maybe it was just her getting older but now I wonder if it doesn't have to do with having this fungal infection? The doctor prescribed meds for us, so we'll get it cleared up. Just looking for anyone that has any expereince with it.
I found an article on thrush and now I'm worried that we'll (ME) will be in pain for weeks! That the doc won't treat it aggressivly enough. (he prescribed on dose of diflucan for me and some nystatin for Sora) After readiing a bit I think that I've had it for almost 2wks now and it's in my milk ducts. I blame getting it on all the antibiotics I've been on lately. Any advice is much appreciated!! (such as how to tell the doc I think I know better how to treat my thrush than he does? LOL by asking for more diflucan.....according to what I read I'll need more than one dose) Thank you! Posted on 11/05/09, 09:11 pm |

I am waiting on replys from this because that is what I have, too. i have been prescribed something from the doctor, but haven't been able to pick it up yet. I was told that it can be irritating to the baby. Cause it can cause them not to latch on good. Also, they said if you try to rub the white off, it will bleed. My mother, said, putting glycerin on a cloth and rubbing the babies mouth with it, will get rid of the white. It is something that we do in Africa, apparently. The pain isn't so bad since I have been using my babies Nystatin solution on me, but it is still tender. Girl, at first it was torture during feeding sessions. I had throbbing, burning pain in my shoulders down to my back. I started giving him a little formula when I couldn't take the pain, and that was how my milk supply went down. Hope things work out for you.

Sorry, one more thing, I had talked to a breastfeeding consultant at the WIC office, and she said to stay away or limit dairy products and sugar. Seems to help or it could be my imagination. She recommended a site that was heavenly: http://www.nbci.ca/index.php?optio...

Thrush is a real pain in the boob! Try to "search the discussion" lists below, by typing in "thrush"...Many others have posted on the topic. Indeed, antibiotic use causes it....esp. if yo take a lot, or for a prolonged period of time.
UI also do not think one dose of diflucan will "do it". I recomend a multi-approach: gentian violet on yoru nipples and swabed inside Sora's mouth, grapefruit seed extract, probiotics, may bra or breast-pad changings a day, APNO (all-purpose nipple oitnment, which will kill off both any thrush and any bacteria, and the hydorcortisone in it will keep the pain and swelling in your boobs down. You have to ask your md for it, at the same time you get some more fluconazole. Print out the handouts, and bring them to him. A compounding pharmacy can prepare it for you. You put it on after each feed. Leave it one. The little bit she gets in her mouth will help treat her. You should also ask about treating SOAR with the diflucan. You need to treat both of u to eradicate it! Finally, probiotics. Get soem in capsules, get some special probiotic yogurt form the heath food store, or some KEFIR. Packed with bacteria that will help kill off the thrush. Good luck!
