BF getting better!

I'd like to thank everyone for thier help. Sora is now 2.3wks old and BF is finally starting to get easier. We're still having troubles getting the latch thing down. She IS latching properly more often but we still struggle at the begining of a feeding for several minuetes for her just to stop fussing AT my breast, and sucking a bunch of air in the process of trying to latch on. We haven't had to supplement feed in a few days though, YEAH!! My milk supply has decreased a lot (I'm no longer engorged YEAH). I think the antibiotics I'm on for the uterine infection I have and having the flu for a week, may have some affect on my milk supply also. I know she getting enough though because she gets milk on her face, and burps up some after every feeding. PLUS she's finally gaining weight! (slowly and not much but it's better than none) and she'll go about 2hours between feedings.

Please very send positive thoughts our way that things will continue to improve and keep moving in this direction!

" That is great news...thank goodness you have been so persistent. Many would have given up. You rock mamma!

I was just wondering..did anybody ever have a look at her to check for that tongue tie?

Anyway, so happy to know things are getting better! :) "

" Unfortunatly that hasn't been looked at yet. I was too late for her last doc's appointment and was forced to reschedule. Though they did weigh her for me which reassured me that she' getting enough to eat. That was concerning me a bit since she eats for so short a time and so often. But she's up by 1/2 a pound and so is doing very well! "

" Your baby sounds much like mine. We didnt get the latching down pat until at least 3 weeks and we still have a bit of difficulty on the right side since Im not as confident on that side but after a few tries she latches. Im convinced that her mouth was just too small for my nipple. I pretty much have to supplement a few oz of formula each day otherwise Im nursing all the time and get nothing done and she doesnt get much sleep and fusses when the milk supply runs low from all the feeding! :-P Mine was also slow to gain weight but is packing on the weight now too! Its very frustrating and intimidating when dealing with bf'ing issues like ours, but we keep it up and eventually it all works out!

Good job mommy and Sora! :-) "

" Nymph, I would still suggest that the next time you see the doctor, you get the you get the tongue-tie checked out, just so you know if that could have been the reason.

Of course, the bruising to her face alone could have had an impact.

If it is tongue-tie, but things are going better, you may be one of the fortunate mother- tongue-tied baby pairs who manage to learn bf, even with the tongue tie. It seems to be something that babies can sometimes outgrow, but it would be useful to know now, so you can keep an eye on future developments, such as speech, and so forth.

fdc, here is a link on how to wean from supplementing from formula and going to bm only, if you are interested. It offers quite interesting reading, as wel as suggestions on how to increase milk supply:

" I asked the doc and he checked out her tonge. He siad that it looks normal to him. LOL o fcourse she wouldn't co-operate but I did describe it to him. My oldest son was severly tongue tied, we used to say he had a "forked tongue" like a snake because his tonge was SOOOoo heart shaped and short. We never did have it snipped because he BF really well. He spoke a bit later than strictly "normal" but had no articulation issues and is doing very well. Our doc actually said that BF was VERY good for his tongue tie as it helped stretch it out a bit. I guess we're just lucky! "
