This means they have seen something unusual on your mammogram/sonogram that makes them suspicious and they want to do a biopsy tro verify what is there. They will not know what it is until they take a piece and check it out.
This does not mean that you have cancer. Most of the time these biopsies come back as some other benign breast condition (cyst, calcification, or other non threatening mass) that can be caused by such simple things as excessive caffeine. Your doctors are being careful, and they should be. If it is cancer, the earlier it is detected the better prognosis for your outcome. If it is not cancer, they need to mark and note it for future reference. Of course you are scared. It would be unusual if you weren't. Get the biopsy so you have the knowledge, as knowledge is the best weapon asgainst fear that you can get. Know that, if it is cancer, there are many treatment options out there and they are getting better every day. Also know that there are more people surviving cancer than ever before. Just look at the women on this site to know you are not alone. Whether your biopsy is negative or positive for cancer, please come back here to express any feelings you have and to get answers for any practical questions you might come up with. Never hesitate to ask. There are so many of us here that there is bound to be at least one person who has been in your situation or has asked the same questions. In the meantime, try to relax as much as possible. Follow your doctor's advice and know that you are doing all you can for yourself. It sounds like your docs are taking good care of you, so rely on their experience and knowledge to guide you. Best of luck to you. - Diane
