My daughter in law may have IBC

We just found out this week that my daughter in law may have Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Her PCP is worried that it is cancer, but the man at radiology says it's only Mastitis and set her home with 3 weeks worth of antibiotics to take and said to make an appointment to come to see him in 3 weeks. Her PCP said that there's a rare cancer connected to Mastitis and he doesn't want her to wait 3 weeks to have a biopsy and that IBC is a very FAST growing cancer. Any information you can give me will be very appreciated it.

" Hi,

I'm so sorry to hear your daughter may have inflammatory bc.

Inflammatory BC is rare and aggressive. It if were me, I would not wait 3 weeks on an antibiotic, better to have the biopsy, find out what the path results are and go from there.

Three weeks is a long time to go worrying about what if when it may be nothing.

Good luck and hope everything shows b-9! "

" My apologies, but I have to wonder in what medical system the radiologist writes prescriptions and supercedes the PCP's opinion. Not in any I've been in or would agree to be in. An oncology radiologist might, but you didn't mention whether the radiologist was an oncology radiologist or just the regularly trained professional who reads Xrays, etc. I would still go with the PCP's advice and ask for a referal to an oncologist to discuss it further.

If the PCP orders a biopsy, have your daughter get it so you know what it is she has. She can also take the antibiotics to see if they help. They can't hurt as far as I know. Waiting 3 weeks before the biopsy can be a huge risk. Heaven forbid it is cancer but if it is, why give it 3 more weeks to reach the lymph system before you act? Particularly with the suspicion of a very aggressive breast cancer.

Mom, influence your daughter and her PCP to order and get that biopsy IMMEDIATELY. You know the radiologist's advice is not right or you wouldn't be asking. Follow your instinct. As parents, our instincts are often better than the opinion of one schooled and holding the best advanced medical degree. You know your daughter and you know something is wrong. She needs you to be strong enough to help her make the right decision now, possibly more than ever before.

Good luck to you both. I hope it turns out to be nothing serious.
