I am 40 yo and I found a small pea-sized lump under my nipple about a month ago. I went to my doctor and he told me he thinks its nothing but to get an ultrasound just to be sure. I went for my ultrasound and the tech went out to get the radiologist to talk to me. He told me that they want to do a biopsy but not to worry. I talked to my doctor and I flat out asked him if I should worry and his answer was yes since its not definitely benign. I found the lump because it was a little sore and irritated. I had a mamography about 3 months prior and nothing showed up. I waiting for my biopsy to be scheduled which I am very nervous about and just wanted to chat with anyone who could share some information or encouragement. Does breast cancer usually start out this way?

Breast cancer begins in the milk glands and ducts. The ducts lead to the nipple. Mammograms often do not pick up smnall lumps that 'hide' behind the nipple.
There is no 'usual' way for breast cancer to show up. Ask 50 women and you will get at least 48 different discovery stories, in my experience. The fact that you found your lump while it is apparently very small is a very good thing. Worying is not going to change the nature of your lump but it will make you feel terrible and can make you sick. I strongly recommend you hang in there until the biopsy tells you what you are facing. If it comes back positive for cancer cells, it is still not time to worry; it is time to get busy. Once you know the facts of your situation and take a good look at all your options, then any worry you are feeling will probably lessen or may go away completely - it depends on your emotional disposition. Worry is a useless and wasteful emotion. It can paralyze you and impair your ability to make clear judgments at a time when making clear judgments is the most important thing you can do. I hope it comes back as nothing more than a nasty cyst and you can put your mind at rest. Be well. - Diane

. I found a lump on my right side about 6 yrs. ago and because my mother had just died of breast cancer, I was worried. I ended up having a lumpectomy and it was benign. After that I felt sort of embarrased, like I was over reacting. 5 yrs. later ( when I turned 40) I found one and wasn't sure whether to go or not cause I figured it would be nothing. Then I remembered it is something you do when you turn 40. I ended up having to have a mam., ultrasound, and eventually 2 biopsies. It's been found benign, but I have to go get it checked by the oncologist every 6 months because I am at high risk of becoming cancer. At first I was VERY nervous and didn't know what to do, then I decided that I needed to start thinking about other things. I have epilepsy and have for 32 yrs. My Dr. and I agreed it is time for surg. ( temporal lobectomy). I have qualified to join a research project and have this surg. done. I'm very excited, but I do know that if I do have cancer then I wouldn't be able to have my surg. So I have decided that I don't have time to worry about cancer and instead think about this life changing surg. I am going to be having and how much better my life is going to be when I do. I wish you the best of luck on your tests.
