Allergic Reaction From a Biopsy Clip

Hi my name is Sharon and I was wondering if anyone became sick after a biopsy marker was put in their breast? I was sick as a dog for five years and couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. My organs felt like they were failing and I thought I had CFS. It turns out that the nickel infiltrated my hypothalamic-pititary-adrenal axis and caused Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency a life threatening disease. I am now on steroids and may have to take them the rest of my life. And I came close to death many times and didn't know it. All my doctors kept telling me nothing was wrong with me. I was looked at like I had three heads. I went from being terrified of having breast cancer to not caring if I lived or died.

In some studies they have found 42% of CFS participants have an allergy to nickel.

I also want to get the word out on metal allergies and the connection to autoimmunity diseases.

" your story is very scary. I'm sorry you had to go thru that. I have a small-marble sized "something" in my rt breat. it was blown off the past two yrs as fibroids. They said it would go away. i had fibroids in other places and so i blew it off. Well it was supposed to go when my period ended and it didn't. the past three months it stayed and feels different. Not sure how but it does, it sort of shifts or feels like not so round. a little bigger now also. i had a mammogram which came back neg on 7/03/07, and an ultrasound which wasn't so clear. She, the dr who read the mammo and u.s reffered me to have a mri. i am going tomorrow and they called to day to say I am scheduled for another u.s as well as mri and will be meeting w/ another dr. i am nervous. what happened to fibroids? Why this last minute change? I was told to get a biopsy but chickened out because of the needle. your story cared the hell out of me. I'm really freaking out. No family history. "

" Hi,
An ultrasound is very accurate in detecting solid masses from cysts. An MRI can detect the smallest of tumors but a biopsy is definitive in determining if it is breast cancer. Have they put markers in your breast in the past? If not I would continue with the screening. I will never allow them to put anything in my breast again. If you have an allergy to metals I would be very careful in allowing them to leave a marker in your breast. One way to tell is if you can't wear cheap earnings. Good luck and let me know what happens. I do get screened all the time as I have an 82% chance of getting breast cancer. "

" I did not have a mri. I was scheduled for one then they did an ultrasound and mammo again. Which is very disconcerting. This is supposed to be one of the top hosp and i was told two different things and it was orig my rt breast and they wanted to do the left over cause the mammo which i was told was neg had two questionable masses, and it added more anxiety. Bottom line--they are cysts in the rt breast which they don't do anything about and they are nothing to worry about. the left breast has to nodular cyst w/ debris that they will be monitoring. I come back in 6 months to do all over again. yeah!!! no markers and i don't think i am allergic to anything. i do wear cheap earrings and never had a reaction. "
