Seeing a Surgeon For Lump For The First Time
Watch this
View More Posts Ignore
I have just been referred to a surgeon for a lump in breast.I have an mammogram scheduled for this week. Then I go see the surgeon.
My question is on biopsy's. I know every case is different. But in general,on the biopsy,do they put you out and take the lump out and test it or do they do a needle biopsy in the office? And if they do,has anyone had a needle biopsy done with local anesthesia, and if so how bad does the local anesthesia hurt? I want this surgeon to put me out and take this lump out but I don't know how much choice/control I have in something like this regarding doing a needle biopsy in the office as opposed to having it removed then tested?

" I have had MANY biopsies throughout my life--including needle, core and lumpectomies. My experiences were that the needle biopsies varied in pain, probably based on the location and depth of the area they were taking a sample from. To be honest, getting the local anesthetic was a couple of shots with the needle, which is not great--but nothing horrible. Needle biopsies for me did involve some pain, but the local anesthetic should numb you to prevent this. It really depends on the where etc., but I will say it will not be as bad as the worry beforehand makes it. It is always the not-knowing that makes our fears grow. I am sure you will do fine, and don't be afraid to ask for more local. I wish you wellness. "

" The needle biopsy I had was not really very painful. A couple small pricks for the anesthesia and not much after that.

They will usually advise you what type of biopsy is appropriate for you, it is not uisually your choice. I saw my surgeon first. He ordered the needle biopsy and gave me the results when they came in. He referred me to my oncologist and the plastic surgeon. He did my mastectomy and the plastic surgeon he referred me to did my first reconstructive surgery, my fills, and will do my final surgery.

The original surgeon did give me thde option of mastectomy, lum, pectomy, e6c. approprizate for me. It was totally my decision to go for the mastectomy. I was not comfortable with lumpectomy and do not regret that decision one bit.

The worry is the worst. You will be through the biopsy before you know it and wondering of what you were so afraid.

Giood luck.

" 6 yrs. ago I had a mammo. and they found a lump. The Dr. decided to do a lumpectomy and it turned out to be benign. about a yr. and a half ago I found another lump and went to the Dr. that time they did a core biopsy, then they had to do another core biopsy. They said it was benign, but they want me to see the oncologist every 6 months because I am at high risk of it turning into more. I asked them why they didn't just take it out like the first one. My Dr. said that if they were to do that every time they found a lump I would have little dimples all over my breasts, so they would rather just keep a close eye on it. It sorta makes sense and then there is part of me that just wants to get rid of the damn thing. "
