Advice:
How to support a friend?

My very dear friend has just had a breast cancer reoccurence after just 4 years and it appears it has spread to her liver and possibly bones. She is having a PET scan done tomorrow. Does anyone know how long it takes for results?
Of course I'm hoping and praying the PET is negative but if it's not I believe that means you are stage IV. Is there some kind of guide lines for life expectancy?
As someone who may be experiencing this....is there anything anyone has said to you which you found comforting? I don't want to say the wrong thing- I am so sad I can't even think of what to say.

" You are already a good friend to want to be supportive. Listening family and friends was what I needed. No one could cure me or help me get better. I just needed to process by talking. Everyone's journey with this disease is different. There is no typical time-line. It depends on her body, spirit and of course the disease. Hospice helped me understand the process of dying and letting go. Good luck and hang in there. "

" I'm so sorry to hear your friend's cancer has returned. The results of a PET can vary depending on the doc and their way of telling the patient.

Some women hear their results quickly, others unfortunately have to wait til next appointment whenever that may be which can be torture. Hopefully the scan is clean.

The first thing I always do after a scan, test, bloodwork, etc., is head straight to medical records or whomever is doing the test and request a copy for my records. Many times I have received them ahead of my appointment. Also I have caught errors on their part so it works for me.

From what i have heard and read sometimes it is easier to take leads from your friend. If she appears to not want to talk about it or does, that sort of thing.
You are already helping her and your support of being there, listening, maybe running errands, going with her to an appointment will all help. "

" Thanks for the replies. Her Pet Scan showed it did spread to her liver. The doctor said the good news is she is young and they are small. He has a curative treatment plan. She will have her masectomy tomorrow and as soon as she is recovered they will go after the liver. I told her if he says he has a curative plan then that's what we are going to believe in! "

" I am sorry your friend's cancer has recurred; particularly in the liver.

That is tough but, if her doctor thinks he has a curative plan, go with that.

IK hope she comes through both surgeries beautifully and fully recovers.

You are a wonderful friemd and she is lucky to have you in her corner.

Best,

- Diane "

" My friend had her mastectomy. The night before a dr. called her and suggested she postpone or cancel the surgery. She went thru with it anyway. Not sure who called her - the surgeon? Who would know more - the oncologist or a surgeon? "
