My mother and I have both tested positive for the BRCA2 gene mutation. My mom is a 2 time breast cancer survivior, her sister has been fighting breast cancer for 15 years. (it has now metastizied) and their mother died of ovarian cancer. I have opted for complete hysterectomy and double mastectomy to reduce my chances of getting either. I am a 40 year old mom of 5 and don't want to put my kids through any more than they need to go thru. Does anyone have any advice or guidance for me? Thanks for all your help.

" I completely undertsand your decision and would probably do the same. Mother of 5, WOW!!! You sound pretty sane for someone who is raising 5 kids (lol).

I had breast cancer last year but tested negative for both BRCA1 and 2, so I had a single mastectomy. At the end of the day, we have to make the decision that WE can live with, taking into consideration our own unique situations. I am sure you have come to the right decision for you and, if your doctor is in agreement, I would not second guess yourself.

Anyone who tells you they have THE answer for you is likely dead wrong. My crystal ball is on the fritz and I don't know anyone else who has one that is working. That'd be a neat trick. As long as you've gotten all the information regarding what to expect from both procedures and their effect on your hormones, etc., you are good to go.

Good luck to you and your family.

" I also tested positive and chose to have a double mastectomy and have my one remaining ovary removed. I just did this in May and im currently going through reconstruction. After doing alot of research and speaking with several doctors and genetic counselors, I feel like i made the only choice that made sense to me. Its a very personal decision and you need to do your research and decide whats right for you. If you have any questions about the surgery or the reconstruction, please feel free to email me...shirley "

Please update us on how you are and with any other questions or thoughts you might have. I believe you will feel better for it.
