Lumpectomy needed?

Hello, I am new to the group but not DS. I need some advice before I have a lumpectomy This Thursday (in 2 days).
I have 2 aunts that had BC and my Mom, Grandpa & Grandma had lung cancer and one aunt that passed from colon cancer. 2 yrs ago I had some begnine calcifications biopsied and removed. I went for my follow up and my new Dr found a "lump" in my right breast in the ten o'clock position--I had a mammo and ultrasound and nothing was said. 6 mo later the place that did my mammo said I was due to follow up. I saw my Dr again and she said that she still felt the lump and sent me for UltraSound & mammo. It showed a "lesion" as she put it and the radiologist said it did not LOOK cancerous and suggested follow up ultrasound in 6 mo. My Dr had my left breast mammo'd & ultrasound and found lumps in this one as well that the radiologist said did not look cancerous. My question...finally--I'm sorry-- Why is my Dr doing a lumpectomy if the radiologist said the lumps do not appear cancerous???????? She said "I'm not taking any chances with you" (Due to my parental history) Either they can be cancerous or not? I'm so confused. I just don't wanna go through such a serious procedure if there appears to be no cancer. Am I wrong? I'm really in need of some advice from people who know more about this than I. Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!!! Dawn Posted on 02/03/09, 03:02 pm |

Why in the WORLD are they doing a lumpectomy and not a biopsy??? I don't understand. The first thing that should be done is a biopsy. You do NOT remove ANYTHING without doing this first!!! Can you call this doc and ask if she's really doing a BIOPSY???
If she's not, I would NOT let her do the surgery WITHOUT a biopsy first. This is ridiculous. Good grief.

THANK YOU! My point exactly! My regular Dr would not approve me for surgery so it was cancelled. I am seeking a second oponion next week. I am gonna go see my moms cancer Dr that I've already seen about a nodule in my lung.
I want him to view the films and tell me what HE thinks! I'll let ya know when I know. Thanks a million for responding, sometimes its hard not having anyone that can understand to talk to.

Thank goodness! I'll be interested in hearing what this other doctor says. I'm sorry it's taken me so long to respond, but I don't get online everyday due to pain issues.
I'm glad you're getting this second opinion! I feel better now! LOL. Let me know, ok??? Thanks. Hugs, Lee

thanks Lee!
ok...I saw the onocologist-he said I need to see a breast surgeon-I go on the 11th. I think the time from when I saw him up to this coming wednesday is absolutely killing me. Time is moving so very slow. When I left his office, I got in the car and had absolutely no words to describe how I felt. none. I sobbed so very hard and just told my husband that I needed a minute. I still couldn't tell you what I 'felt'. He said I have two lumps in the right breast and cysts in the left. Both lumps are on top of each other and irregular or abnormal. I'm just trying to figure out how to breathe--I just can't breathe. I also just want to say *thank you* Lee for answering me and for your support. Dawn

Jeez, I'm sorry I haven't answered til now! I've been offline for a few days due to pain. It's been too hard to sit! LOL. I've got a lousy spine.
Jeepers, I know what you mean about not being able to 'breathe.' I've been saying prayers! I hope you got some good news today! 'Course they probably can't give you any DEFINITE news til they do a biopsy, right? Gosh, everything is "hurry up and wait." If you're like me, you want answers NOW, and RIGHT NOW!!! Not a week from now! I don't see why it takes so long. They supposedly sent a man to the moon ~ why does it take so long to do tests like these??? This bugs me. Grrrr. Please keep me informed, ok??? I gotta know! Big hugs, Lee
