There is another way to look at it. Professional Baseball is entertainment. The Yankee organization has a lot of money to spend- so why not give it to the players? Who else should be getting it but the most talented stars? When a Hollywood studio wants to make a big movie, they hire great actors, and have to spend a lot to get Tom Hanks or Julia Roberts or Meryl Streep. Even when a lot of money is spent on a movie, it's not always good. There are a lot of variables. The Yankees have been spending more on their stars than anyone else forever, but haven't won the championship since 2000, and there are many years they don't win even with their fat cat payroll. Just last year the Tampa Bay Rays were in the World Series with a team that's on the bottom feeder level in salaries.

When you watch the Yankees play, you gotta admit those players are incredible athletes with great talent, and would be awesome no matter what team they played for, they just happen to play for the Yankees because that's where they got the best contract. I'm not a Yankee fan, but they played well this year and deserve the championship. When it comes right down to it, the guys on the field have to perform over and over during a very long season. If the money is there in the sport to be spent, they deserve to get it.

pianogirl, you're probably very nice, but I'd appreciate it if said that the Yankees suck.

Just sayin'.

BTW, the Red Sox payroll is the second highest in baseball, and not that much lower than the Yankees.
