Summer Reflections

With the new cool air resonating in the wind, the knowledge that I must soon winterize my boat looms in the corners of my mind. The act of storing my one refuge for a few months is a sad one but Jimmy Buffett once sang "Every stop is a place to start" and that reigns true with this. As sure as I will winterize the boat this year I will re-rig in a few months.
Reflecting on this past summer I realize that I did a lot of healing while I was out there. This season I saw new waters, visited old haunts, met with old friends, and found some new ones. On some days I found fair winds and blue skies while on others I beat into heavy air and strong seas. Each day was part of the journey but this is also true in life as each day is part of the journey of life. Not every day is easy, not every day is hard, but every day become part of who we are. Not even realizing it, I found more healing along the way. Each storm that I weathered, each mile that passed my stern, and each port I visited put distance between the person that I was and the person I was becoming. I found forgiveness in the sunrise and I learned how to let past hurt go as the sun set over the blue waters of the Chesapeake Bay. When I am out there I am reminded how basic life really is. We tend to complicate every aspect our lives and become anxious when we realize how complicated everything seems to be. Returning to the basics is a way to remind yourself what is really important. It allowed me to reflect on my past year and realize that at times I had healed more than I thought that I did and other times I hadn't healed as much as I thought that I had. The end result was I was able to heal other parts of my life and prepare the way for new things to enter my life. The future is open for all of us. We can only make plans and hope that they come true. If my course is not altered by life, at this time in 18 years I will be making my way down the intercoastal waterway towards Florida and probably be in South Carolina or Georgia about this time. I realize that the tides of life can change on a whim and it is most likely that this trip will be delayed by family, financial ties, or other things. Either way, this season that just passed was just another step towards this goal. Posted on 11/04/09, 06:11 pm |

I did cut myself off a bit on this post as to keep it shorter.
I feel as though my soul is tied to the Chesapeake Bay and the water. I feel at home when I am out there, not when I am on land. It is the adventure but also the simplicity that makes it so appealing. How can you describe the way the sun sets over the salt marshes of the Chesapeake Bay? The different shades of orange, red, purple, blue, and yellows that reflect of the water and make it hard to tell where the water ends and the sky begins are impossible to describe. A photograph will not even do it justice.

Wonderful to share this with us, Heave!! I had a place like you describe to heal at the lake that we lived at before we moved. I haven't felt quite the same way about the new place, but I still find quiet places here to meditate. I have long thought that home is where I am, and I am happy to report that it is true! Hugs to you, Kimmee
