Socializing (not dating)

I am going to go out ot my first social event today -- a birthday party for a young person who is turning 1-yr-old. This was a sudden decision to go, and a last minute invite -- anybody think of something I can pick up quick and easy to taek with em so I don't arrive empty-handed? I am also a tad anxious about going out as a single person again, especially when the PROCESS is so new. I am so scared that I will cry cuz it's all about family (not mine) and I am alone.

" Pick up a stuffed animal (gender nuetral) and keep a stiff upper lip. If the people there are truely friends & family they will respect the fact that this is not the time or the place to pry into your life!!
Also, remember a diamond is made from time and pressure. "

" Go and have fun! I have found that I feel so much better around other people. I was pretty much a homebody before, but have starting doing things with friends on weekends. I only feel really down when I'm by myself.
Pick up a book for younger children or colors (that wash off) and coloring book. Kids love those. You are never alone when you are among friends. "

" It's been a long time since I have been around a one-year-old, but outside toys are good ones...pail and shovel, big ball he/she can kick around.
And go and have a good time...take that first step. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how well you will do. If you get overwhelmed, you can always quietly leave. "

" Turning 1, grab a doll if its a girl and grab a toy truck if its a boy.

If you need to cry, you need to cry just slip out for a minute or go to the washroom. Your friends should understand that this is a hard time for you and appreciate that you came out to celebrate.

It may seem scary now but once you get it over with then that is one more victory and everyday you'll get stronger and will be more ready to face the next challenge.

Try to have fun!! "
