Brain Injury

My Dad suffered a brain injury on 23 September 2009 when he fell down a flight of stairs at home. He suffred two bleeds and we were informed that he had a 3rd of chance of surviving but with major handicapps, a 3rd of a change of making a good recovery or a 3rd of a chance of not surviving at all.
A week later he started to come round and on the first day he showed signs that he recognised us and he made some clear words. However, ever since, although he is more awake he seems not to know us and not making any clear words at all. He is in an incredible amount of pain as well due to the other injuries he substained during the fall.
We are all devastasted as a family. My Dad is a very clever man and a very talented artist. I can't believe this has happened to him.
He is currently on the Neuro Critical Care Unit at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge.
I know it's early days - are we expecting too much from him too soon?

" Recovery is SLOWLY BUT SURELY. My car accident which gave me my brain injury was in 1/06 and I had to learn everything over again, including breathing and swallowing. Be patient, it does take FOREVER! I'm just getting memory back, and I'm a college grad. GOOD LUCK!!! "

" I so remember being at the "expecting/wanting" too much stage. I did not realize until 2 years into all this that it really was going to be a slow process.
Each brain injury is different. That is for sure! And everyone heals at a different pace.
Keep hanging in there....and be patient. "

" Each injury is unique as each person is. I had what the ER doctor said was a bump on the head and I would be fine in a few days. A couple of days later, it felt like my brain wanted to come out of my skull. My CT scans and MRI's to date are all showing nothing. Yet I have a mild TBI and am disabled. It is 3 1/2 plus years later. The early part is always the worst. Listen to the doctors and pray. Be there for him. Don't give up, that is the worst that you could do. "

" You've got some really good advice already! I want you to know how fast it can be as well. I am one of the very few I've heard that came out of it as fast as I did...it took 2 days. That is of course after 5 weeks of being out of it.

However, all of that is not without some price to pay...I thought the doctors were full of it, there was nothing wrong with me...ya it's been a hard pill to swallow and I still want to deny it.

However your Dad's recovery goes fast or slow never forget how lucky you all are to still have each other!

Best wishes, good luck and most of all God bless! "

" What a qwinkydink my injury was on Sept 23, 2005. Any how it sounds like your father is in the right place, just be patient it does take time for the body and brain to heal. The brain may take quite a bit longer to heal depending on the damage. Usually the ones that are intellegent prior to the incident do seem to improve at a faster rate. This may be altered also by his pain. Hope you all find some peace and resolve soon.
Take care! nsm "

" Thank you all for your support and reassurance. Dad has had the pain team round today and they have given him some new drugs to try and help with pain. He already seems more settled but still not very responsive. I put that down to him being utterly exhausted after all the pain he has been in for the last week.
They have also done another CT scan today and are happy that the bruising is going down and that he has had no further bleeds. They are a bit concerned about his chest as he has some fluid there. They are going to take a sample of the fluid and get any infection under control before they move him back to the Norwich hospital. That will be better for the family as currently we have to make a 140 mile round trip to see him every day. "
