I suffered a severe closed head injury in 1985. Yes, it has been a long time since said injury and, overall, I have done quite well in overcoming any expected long-term effects of the head injury.
Now I have come across another difficulty, however. Earlier on, several years ago, I found I was drinking more than I probably should have. Spent a year in Alcoholics Anonymous, attending meetings regularly and arrested that difficulty. Since then, however, there have been other problems. For awhile, I smoked marijuana on a somewhat regular basis but was able to halt that, as well. It's funny, because it almost seems as though I am 'addicted to addictions.' Now it has become more serious. My current addiction is coke-based products. Not snorting, but smoking them. It feels good, so I do it. Not wanting to lose my wife and children, I am seeking help from any source I can. Funny, I just spent two months in relative seclusion and there was no problem or temptation at all, to do the drugs. Now that I have returned home, though, and it is available, I use. I don't know what to do. Please offer advice or suggestions as to how I may overcome my dependency or addiction. Thank you very much. Posted on 06/26/09, 09:06 pm |

If you don't quit smoking Crack, you will lose everything and die. Get back in AA, NA and every other program you can.

If you mean "smoking crack" call it what it is!! And that shit makes you feel crazy enough without adding it on top of a brain injury. YOu see, I did all my drug experiemantation with drugs prior to a brain injury. And knowing what I know now...I HONESTLY would let someone shoot me in the head and kill me before i smoked crack, or snorted coke, or smoked marijuana. No matter of the situation in which your life is, drugs are not readily available. People will not pressure you to do them. If you are with some serious heads they're not gonna even offer you any because it will coast you money. So, my advise to you it to just stay away from people who are high. If you dont get high with them, odds are they'd choose someone else who is more tolerant of their drug problem.

Hey Cassh:
Brain injury is hard enough on the brain without and your person relationships without the added struggles of addictive drugs. That you were OK when you were in seclusion and not very tempted tells me that you are strong enough and still capable of beating this so you don't lose your family and your future. That's great! I've seen a couple young men die because they came out clean from rehab and tried to do the amount they were doing before they were clean. Their systems can't take it all anymore and so they die accidentally. It's very common. Sadly, if you are really serious about getting off the drugs, you will have to change the drug climate in your life so that it is NOT available. Right now if I wanted to buy coke, I would have no clue as to how to get it or who to ask. You need to create that kind of safety net around you. If you need to move and change your phone numbers, that's a great start. You've done it before when you were in seclusion so you CAN and good for you. Now you just have to turn that "seclusion" into a new way of life. Make the drugs unavailable by making the people supplying them unavailable. Nobody can do drugs forever. At some point you'd have to give them up or die. Might as well do it now while you still have your family instead of a few years from now when you realize you had the chance to save them and your future. You can do this. Go into the mentality you had when you were in seclusion. Get another job to take up all that idle time or take up some time-consuming new hobby. Become a workout nut. Start going to meetings again every day. Change your routine so that those tempting times are now filled up with other things. Time with your family. Something healthy. Good luck to you. It's not too late. We wish you well.

Dear Friend:
You have a wife and children, something I never will have. You are very lucky. The question you have to ask yourself is "Will I be able to remember my baby's first steps, etc." Drugs kill the brain and with the cognitive challenge you already have, please don't jeapordize their future, wife included. Drugs are for loser's and we survivor's aren't losers. A web page: www.headtohead.org/?art=255

If you're going to do drugs do something less harmful. Crack is probably the worst you could choose.

Hey Warlokk, that's actually pretty good advice. I try not to judge people and I understand that we're all just doing what we can to get through. Sometimes we get in over our heads. Cassh, we've all done stuff that we didn't plan would get out of control. You don't have to worry about what this says about you or carry any of those burdens. It's just an addiction like anyone gets addicted-to shopping, to work, to alcohol, to cigarettes....You got caught like many people do. Everyone starts gambling with just a fun penny slot machine...The main thing is you get that it's threatening to take your family and your future and that's awesome. Save it now while you still have the perspective to know the difference between your priorities. You can do this and we're rooting for you.

Listen to everybody's advice. Bottom line none of that is good for you. You might be suprised to learn that the alcohol is by far the worst for your brain. I mean, don't get my wrong, the cocaine is rotten for any brain, injured or not, but the alcohol is the worst for your brain by far. You need to go to AA and tell the group that you had a brain injury. That is the best way to start. If you care about your loved ones and your life, then you need to get help right away. Don't do anything else. www.aa.org or whatever other helpful organizations are out there for you. Good luck and God Bless
