Work and Depression

I wanted to find out how you REALLY know when it is time to stop working? I am using a walker because with a cane my balance is way off and have twisted my knee quite a few times.

This is all so new to me and so if I ramble, please forgive me. I am in constant pain (either cancer or arthritis), some days a lot and some days not much but I still haven't finished all the tests before I can start chemo. It seems the hospital where I will be having my second (more invasive) bone marrow biopsy or whatever you call it, isn't being very cooperative with my Oncologist. I guess they are busy.

Well I started out being very positive, knowing that I would be able to handle this problem but as the days go by, I get more and more depressed. I am having such a hard time driving, let alone walking and that hasn't helped the situation either. I am also anemic (surprise) and when I do work, I am exhausted after 3-4 hours. If I lay down to take a nap it is typically for 3-4 hours, so I can't do that at work. I find myself crying more and more and I know that once things start moving again that I will get back to feeling more positive and up.

I want to quit working because by the time I get in the office I am exhausted and in pain again. I really can't take painkillers at work because if I suddenly need to leave for a test or drive before painkillers have worn off, I am afraid I would fall asleep while driving.

One of my problems is I am single, live with my 83 year old mother whose health isn't the best and she cannot drive any more. I have money saved, but I know it wouldn't take long to go through it with this horrid disease.

I am hoping to take FMLA (will be talking to Human Resources at work tomorrow) and then hopefully Short Term Disability maybe leading into long term disability....just depends on how my treatment goes.

" Dear IcyMist,

I hope you got some real honest advice from the Human Resourses Person at your workplace. I am currently on long term disability. I was given 5 days to decide whether to go back to my workplace or "resign" (my companies words...not mine)...I talked them into giving me two more weeks to allow me to make that decision. During that time I found out everything I could about insurance for people with pre-existing conditions...I talked to lawyers...I talked to anyone I could think of. There is hope for those of us who can't tolerate work due to pain, illness or whatever. My company's policy was to hold my job for 6 months...somehow it turned into 11 due to an oversite, but now I am on long term disability and I don't know at this point for how much longer I will be on it. Hopefully for atleast another 18 months, at which time my case will be reviewed..All I can tell you is that I felt it was best to give myself the gift of time...time to get better...time to get stronger...time to think about what is really important in my life and time to think about what other jobs I might like to have in the future. My advice, even though you didn't ask is to give yourself the gift of time. If there is any possiblity of going on long term disability take it..It may become permanent. Chemo was a hard road for me, I had to quit after my third treatment for osteosarcoma. I could not have worked during that time, even if I wanted too. It is different for everyone.

I wish you the best of luck and hope you come out stronger from your situaion. If you can, also depend on friends and relatives for help. Do not be afraid to ask. Most people don't know what to do to make your situation better. They will be grateful if you tell them exactly what you need.

Good Luck

Lorri "
