Hi my names tors im 23 years old and losing sight

i have come on here just for a little support and to speak to someone, anyone who kinda nows what im going through

quick recap is 4 months ago started losing vision in my left eye then a week later in my right. the doctors can't seem to find out why but it is decreasing very rapidly and can only make shapes out now. i have an great auntie and uncle that lost there sight but they don't know why and don't have much info as very old. doc's think it may be lebers disease but still none the wiser and don't know if im going to go completely blind but have said my vision is now 1/60 which im told is not very good.

if anyone has any support on how to cope with this would be very much welcomed. i guess in some ways im very lucky that i didn't wake up one morning with everything gone. i have also read on here about how people treat you differently i must admit it is surprising how cruel people are you when they know you are losing your sight its as if they are scared of you and treat you very different.

thanks in advance

tors x

" Hi tors x

This is Lou. I have to say I like your positive attitude about the situation, though I know it must be very difficult and scary for you. Try to keep that up and whatever happens, it won't seem like such an unbearable thing to go through. Don't be afraid to let your emotions out though during the times it does get the best of you. I always say if there were ever a time to live as a blind person, it is now; because there are so many things out there that help to live as normal a life as possible. Instead of not being able to do something at all, you may have to adapt and do it differently, but you can still do it nonetheless. There are a few exceptions of course, like driving, but we can still manage with public transportation and even GPS. The harder thing sometimes, as you said, is to get through to people who know very little if at all about visual impairments. My day is complete when I can educate someone a little and see the positive results their receptivity and open-mindedness reaps.

As you might have seen, I'm totally blind and have been since my teen age years, though I have always had glaucoma and cataracts. Let me know how I can help. Have you been to see an opthalmologist? The best hospitals in the country are in Boston and Miami.

Message me if you have any questions. I'd be happy to help however I can. "

" Hi, hon,
I have glaucoma and cataracts, and after removing my cataracts they found damaged from the three strokes I had..I now see thru a thick fog, making out blurry images..
At first I was angry, wondering why me, I have so many medical problems already and now this..You will learn to adjust but it will take time...
As for most people, I find them very helpful and understanding..There a place in Florida that gives people with seeing imperments a free seeing eye dog.. I will try to get their number and adress for you..I didn't qualify because I can't walk to far, discs in the back....You'll be fine, just keep the faith "

" Welcome! You are going through alot aren't you? It's a big adjustment and you have a GREAT attitude. I've been through similar stuff as well. Just diagnosed last fall with RP. Already had uveitis for many years and cataracts from the steroids used to treat it. They say I'll be blind. I'm legally blind now and everything has changed. It's true that there's alot of help out there. I'm glad you found your way here and hope you'll stick around. I would love to support you in your journey! "
