RP and Fish Oil Vitamins

I've had the diagnosis years ago of possible early stages of retinitis pigmentosa but have been okay - even driving, except at night. Recently, a retinologist suggested Vitamin A and Fish Oil pills (whatever !). I noticed that it was recommended to have liver function tests regularly if you take these. (okay, that scares me.) A friend told me that these vitamins can sometimes work in reverse and worsen the condition.
Anyone have info / experience on this? Tonight, my sight temporarily changed - like blinds closing top and bottom of my eyes for a while. Very scarey. Need advice. Posted on 10/05/09, 08:10 pm |

Hi! I have RP and have been taking wild caught cold pressed salmon oil capsules for some time. Some fish oils are good for a variety of health concerns and I've never heard of it worsening any conditions. It enhances your immune system and your heart . It can also help to improve your skin and hair. I wouldn't hesitate to take it.
As for the vitamin A, I don't take it specifically but do take a supplement called Perfect Eyes. I would guess that the liver function tests would have to do with taking vitamin A. I would ask your retinal specialist to be more specific in regards to that supplement if he is advising you to take it. I often experience temporary changes in my vision. I think I've had the same effect you're describing at times. I don't know why it happens either and the doctors are no wiser in that regard. I'm just relieved when it stops..and thankfully it always does. It's a scary diagnosis due to all the unknowns. I can relate to your fear. Try to be positive..it will help you to control your stress which can effect RP to some degree. :)

Hi, I have RP, diagnosed in my 20s and now I'm 46. I've got about 5 degrees of peripheral. I took the vitamin A supplement and apparently for some people the body stores excess in the liver and that's not good. I have not heard of it worsening but I had no positive results from it. It's good to talk to other people. I just found this site today. It can be lonely to go blind.
