I had early-diagnosed retinitis pigmentosa, which has been showing a change in recent months. It should be noted, that I see just fine. Don't need glasses except for reading, and occasionally for TV. I can still legally drive - day or night - but have for safety sake taken myself off the road at night.

Recent retinologist visit suggested my taking Vitamin A. A sheet given to me, also suggested the addition of DHA (is that fish oil?). But he's also given me a prescription to have liver functions tested every six months!! LIVER FUNCTIONS? NOW, I'm scared - maybe more than the sight issue.

Can anyone help me / advise on the above? I'm already in depression over the loss of both parents. My mother would have warned me against taking too much of anything particularly if the liver function issue came up..."they fix one thing and ruin another" would be her words. HELP! Anyone have experience, warnings or suggestions? Thanks, in advance.

" Hello Mamaschild,

I was diagnosed with RP in Decemeber 2007. My eye doctor told me some times vitamin A deficiency is a colprit in causing retina problems, so I was tested for the deficiency and found mine was ok. I was also informed that if you take to much of vitamin A it can cause liver problems.

I wish you the best.

" I agree with DC. I know there are many RP'ers who swear by it, but every doctor I've spoken too has told me the same thing. "There's no scientific evidence that VIT A treatment works", and they have all said if I take it long enough I will need a new liver later in life.

IMHO, I think the fish oil, a healthy diet and beta carotene's are the best choice.
