Having a Family

I am visually impaired and my boyfriend is blind. We would like to have a family after we are married. What are the challenges that you face when you have a family and are disabled like us? We already know that we probably can only handle one child visually and probably need to hire a nanny or someone for at least a short term basis.

" Thank you for responding to my posting. I also have RP. I have never been able to drive and I grew up in a rural area where there was no public transportation at all (for the sighted or disabled). In May, I moved to a small city outside of Baltimore where there is public transportation. There are also plenty of sidewalks. We are leaning toward adoption because of not wanting to risk having a baby who is disabled. We also think that if we adopt an older child, that we would be able to handle his or her needs better. I have lots of experience with babies and children but my boyfriend doesn't have any experience. I have a majority of my frontal sight. It is my peripheral that is missing. My boyfriend only has a very small amount of peripheral sight. He lost a majority of his sight when he was 20. I have been missing my peripheral all of my life. I know that we will know what to do when the time is right. "

" I have RP as well as did my grandmother and my mother. My grandmother was blind most of her life and raised 11 children, out of her 11 children 1 got the disorder. My mother didn't develop it until she was in her 50's and I was in my late 30's when my developed.

It is always difficult to know if you will pass a genetic disorder on to your children. I believe it would be best to speak to your eye doctor or if possible a genetist.

After I was diagnosed I kept questioning my son, who is now 19 years old, about his vision. I check to see if he can see periphially and ask him about his night vision. So far so good.

Good luck with your new life and I wish you the best. "
