Sometimes I wish...

Ok at the risk of being fitted for a coat with very long sleeves I'm going to share something.

Three years ago I began to lose my sight to latent congenital rubella syndrome. I was born blind in the left eye and reasonable sight in the right one correctable to about 20/40 never better. I developed a subcapsular cataract when I was 53 in the process it was found that I was also suffering from corneal erosion. It was recomended that a proceedure be done to smooth out the cornea prior to removal of the cataract . Long story short each proceedure done took a long time to heal. I ended up with a corneal transplant two years ago and then developed retinal swelling which has caused retinal degeneration. All this has left me with no central vision and light and color perception in the peripheal . I am so sensetive to light that I cannot bear to be outside without all but blocking out all light and I have difficulty coping with indoor light. The doctors tell me there is nothing more to be done that will bring any vision back.

That is the set up as it is now. Lately I have found myself wishing that I'd go ahead and lose the rest of my sight and go no light perception at all. Am I crazy for wishing this or is this something others have experianced? I'm not contemplating anything drastic I just think at times how nice it would be not to have to cope with the glare induced pain which can be quite severe at times.

I apologize for the length of this post but I wanted to be sure you knew where I was coming from.

Thanks for listening.

" I don't believe you are crazy at all. It is understandable because of the pain you are suffering. "

" Your are not crazy. I underwent the same emotions before going blind. My eyes would roll, stiil do, wich made me unable to focus on anything. No i am blind, they do still roll yet it does not bother me because there is no perception.

For outside out would spraypaint some sunglasses black and walk blind, get a cane to help you out and wair are normal pair of sunglasses inside to filter the light. "

" My thanks to both of you. YOur comments were helpful.
I have toyed with blacking out a pair of wrap arounds for outdoors and will give it a shot. Getting around will be no problem as I have had O and M. I also have a wonderful guide dog named Brinkley.
I havn't had usable sight for a little over a year now but as I said I still have light and some color perception in the perifry . The light sensitivty is something else though wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I look forward to hearing from others on the subject. I would like to know how common this "wish" is.

Thanks again "

" I think we all go through wishing for a change, when we are experiencing difficult times. Pain is one thing that is the hardest to deal with. But really any problem that is uncomfortable in any way make us tired . Tired of having to put up with the problems we have to deal with . We all have different ways of dealing with stress in our life . We all have a threshold limit. We all have thoughts racing through our minds similar to yours. I call it the IF syndrom. If becomes and big word. . We get rid of one IF and another IF comes. Hang in there we are here for you and we understand your feeling. "
