I am new to the group. I have had 3 corneal transplants. Both eyes when I was in high school(25 years ago) and one in 2004. I have recently been diagnosed with glaucoma. But I am able to work full time and I am able to drive.
Work is a little difficult sometimes when watching presentations in the presentation room. New glasses helped that. And I am able to put my computer about 8 inches from my face which helps. If I have to use others computers it gets a little hairy. I need to say something but don't want to make a big deal about it. I had an itinerate teacher in high school and had an aide who came to school and helped me. She was great but I still felt really awkward about it. Was wondering how to bring this up at work without making too big a deal about it. Thanks Posted on 06/12/09, 10:06 pm |

Hi keephealthy! Good for you that you can and do still work and drive despite your eye conditions! I wonder if you could clarify for me what the exact issue is that you need to address at work...is it having to use others' computers because it's more difficult? Sorry, I wasn't 100% clear. I suppose I would discuss the issue with whom ever is overseeing the circumstances at work. Sharing struggles at work due to personal health issues is a very personal decision so I will give you my take on it. I , personally, don't usually beat around the bush when it comes to something that effects my comfort or ability to perform my job. I would ask to speak to the person in charge and tell them I would really appreciate using only my computer or having one available for all necessary tasks that I am comfortable with visually as I can't do the job to the best of my ability on another computer...and thank them for their help and understanding. If I understood your need correctly of course..if not, please let me know.. It's great to have you here on the forum! Jill

Sorry about not being clear on my question. I do fine at my computer. I only have to use someone else's computer once a day to do some electronic filing. Other than that I am on mine which I have in position for me. Getting use to the forum.
Thanks for the input

Ask your employer to get you a visual aide program. They are required by law to do this for you. Zoomtext offers a thumb drive and can take it with you and use it on other computers to help you view what you are doing. You can view there website at www.aisquared.com
I use this program everyday and have tried others but this one seems to work the best, they also have a 60 free trial. If you chose to buy you can get a 10% discount by entering my code RAF7334 at check out.

Hi,
Not sure if all states have a Dept. of Services for the Blind but here in Washington state they supplied assistive technology such as a scanner designed for blind and low vision users and "Jaws," a computer program that speaks everything on the screen. They also fund my tuition for college and have classes that teach things like cooking, braille, and mobility. Good luck! ~Steph

Thanks for all the advice. My problem is solved. Our IT guy was in our office and I asked him what the chance of getting a modem was and he said he would hook one up for me and he did! So, I am working away at my own desk where I have the monitor about 8" from my nose and I can see great!
Thanks again for the support.

I have RP and like yourself, I'm still in the working and driving capability, although not at night.
As far as using other's computers, can you enlarge / magnify type so that it appears larger and more legible on screen --- then, reduce it to original size before leaving that computer? I'm not sure I'm understanding the computer issue fully.

that was an issue for me back when I was working, too. I designed my own system here at home, but I still have problems with sites with small fonts, and this site is one of them.
