Hello

This is the first on line support group that I have joined. I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.

Suddenly, last year I became legally blind in my right eye. This was the result of a life threatening eye infection. I have vision in my left eye, but it is not great.

My life immediately changed forever. I was forced to retire from a long term employment, I am no longer able to drive, I am dependent upon others for many of my needs, and I have many other changes and obstacles to face. Due to extreme light sensitivity, I find it difficult to leave my home even with dark sunglasses. I am wondering if the light sensitivity improves over time.

I am hoping to hear about your experiences and learn how you cope with blindness or visially impairment.

Thank you for listening.

" Welcome, I promise it will all get better with time and practice. It hard I was in that very place years ago.Try and see if there is a foundation for the blind in your area. They can help give you the tools to you need to live your life. I would talk to your Dr. about the light sensitivity problems. Have you tried any amber or rose color sunglasses? Sometimes, these will help but again it depends on whats wrong with your eyes, everyone is different and what works for some doesn't work for others.. Good luck "

" I was born with retinites pigmentosa. I have some central vision. No peripheral vision and night and color blind.

I have learned to use a computer with zoomtext screen magnifier. I am trying to get work with nti to be a customer service rep from home.

I am okay around the house as long as my family doesn't move the furniture around on me!

Welcome,
James "

" It sounds like you are doing all the right things to be as independent as possible. I hope I can learn better coping skills like so many of you in this support group have and are learning.

I recently had a cataract removed from my left eye. It is a blessing to have regained some of my sight for that eye. My right eye is legally blind. With some improvement in my sight I am still in the process of learning what I can and cannot do independently.

I really appreciate your welcome and response.

thanks "
