On June 14 my daughter’s vision was taken from her by a drug that is for Fibro it is called Cymbalta. She had only taken 2 doses (1 per day @50mg) and she hasn't been able to see for 109days now. The Ophthalmologist said there is "crowding" of the optic nerves in both eyes. The Dr's have ruled out all other possibilities for the cause of her blindness by CT,MRI, Angiogram of both eyes and a Neurologist has said there is nothing he can do and now they are sending her to have a field of vision test done on October 8th. I don't know if there is any nurses or anyone who is knowledgeable about any of this and can help me understand what happens next for her (after the field of vision test) or if there are any Lawyers on this website that could tell me the amount that I should be suing Eli Lilly for. Any ways just wanted to update anyone that wanted to know what happened to my daughter and any help with what I have asked would be much appreciated..... also if you are visually impaired or blind any suggestions on what would help my daughter through this transition of going blind and any tools, software or any advice would be helpful because she is going through so much right now and she has shut me out and doesn't want my help and I just don't know how to help her...thank you in advance for replies.

" As a nurse I can tell you that it is near impossible to sucessfully (that is the key word) sue a drug company unless there are a large number of people having the same side effects from the same drugs. That's the bad news.

The good news is BE PROACTIVE! If the optho says there is crowding in the optic nerves, and I'm assuming you've seen various specialists to get them to do CT, MRI, angio, etc. I am really surprized they haven't done a visual field test before now - that is a simple test can be done in an optometrist office - no need for fancy specialists and no need to wait.
The more you know about her limitations, the more you can use the information to help her see what she can. Visual field loss is like looking through a straw or keyhole - how big it is makes all the difference.

Contact your state's commission for the blind, ask for the paperwork for the doc to verify her field loss and visual accuity so you can take it to the next appointment. Tell the doc you need the paper to get her help. COB won't do anything without the doc's statement, docs can't help with training - they diagnose and treat.

Meanwhile read up on nerves. They are tricky - as in spinal cord injuries. Sometimes there is no way to know the extent of the damage until the inflammation goes away - just as in a car accident, the inital injury causes an inflammitory response to protect the nerve, and it can pinch it because there's not much space. Sometimes it is temporary, you just have to wait for the inflammation to go away. Sometimes, prolonged restriction from inflammation or other can cause permenent damage. But you and the docs won't know intil the inflammation goes away and the body has a chance to try to heal.

Good luck, and keep us posted. I'll pray for you and your family. "
