Is anyone else interested in gender theory? Does anyone here identify as a gender other than male or female, or use other identifiers such as butch, femme, bear, etc.
Labels aren't everything, but I like how the term femme can bring people together. I identify as a femme, hence my name, specifically what a group of online friends and I like to call tomboy femme. My femme means I'm a good complement to masculine, I like to have my doors opened for me, I like to do nice things for my partner, I like butches, and my femme is in my walk and in my mannerisms. A lot of people think femme is more of a lesbian thing but it doesn't have to be. Anyone ever think about this? Posted on 10/31/09, 07:10 pm |

Ooh yeah, I'm very interested in gender :) I've always felt uncomfortable with having to fit neatly and squarely into just one assigned role - I wanted to just be "me" you know? Lol When I was a little kid, I actually said to my parents "no no! I'm a boy" xD I actually looked a bit like a little boy too because of my short hair!
I think my kind of mindset can be best described by genderqueer - that is, where you don't fit into the gender binary. I find that my gender is quite fluid - sometimes I feel more male, and at other times, I feel more female. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gende...

I was born a male but all my life I have considered myself mostly female inside, just one of the girls. That role fits me perfectly. The problem is my physical outside appearance ebbs and flows some days I am perfectly happy looking like a man.Other days I throw in that little extra wiggle of the hips dress in lavender and in general try and let my feminine side out .
I struggle with the invisibility that comes with being a women inside a mans body. The problem is I want to be recognized as a women but I dont want to give up my male body. I wish I could throw a switch and have a male or female body at will. This paradox is causing me some pain lately. Just like as a bisexual I cant pick just one I have the same issue with my gender. I also struggle with lables Im sort of bigendered sort of androgynous but not exactly. Anyway yes gender identity is of great interest to me.

Capemark313 - I sometimes wish I could change appearance at will too haha. You've described my feelings about my physical appearance quite accurately.

I know what you mean. I'm a little different, in that I identify as female, but a femme female, but when I wake up in the morning I decide based on my mood how I want to dress. I can look like a girl, but if I want to put up walls and be badass, I will wear my more masculine clothes. I like my body, but what goes on it and how I want to be perceived change drastically.

I'm fascinated by gender, and more than a little turned on by it, but I must confess I don't get it myself, I'm happy as a bi man, but love androgeny and gender differences in others

I agree with Mycolors - I tend to be very much into dressing and acting the gender I was born with, but love gender-bending in others. Although one Halloween, I did dress as a man and my ex dressed as a woman. I got a HUGE kick out of a man talking to me like I was one of the "dads," I must say. And the sex that night with our genders switched was awesome!

EverythingsOk and capemark313: I totally relate to how you both feel. I don't know how to label it myself either. Lately I've been thinking of myself as a masculine female or an androgenous female (if that makes any sense). But those labels don't really work since some days I feel more feminine and some days I feel more masculine. In general I try to look somewhat androgenous (though its hard for me since I have a feminine build) and am definetely drawn to androgeny in others. I often wonder how common these feelings are among bisexuals. Every bisexual women I've known had a butch side to them, even if they didn't look butch. In general, sexual orientation and gender identity are two separate things, though it does seem that there is a relationship between the two many times. This seems to be a topic that is not often discussed in online groups.

Thanks everyone the "me toos"and "I understand" are an import part of the support I seek for the combination of my gender variation with my bisexuality. It does seem to create a unique set of issues.

Yes gender is an issue. I am physically male but often feel feminine inside. I used to think about transexuality but things are too variable for that. I think I am bigendered as well as bisexual.
