" Whisperinavacuum(and what a great name! It's so cool it makes want to hold my breath)
and Niceguy101-yeah I just had to take up your cause on this. You're right that it's unfair and I gotta credit you for giving a nod to a bi woman's icons. To me, that's a class act, that's what straight guys so often are missing. And I had no idea it was Socrates who championed the idea. You're gonna have me running through the Greek section of Loeb "

" If I remember correctly (it's been a few years since I read it) there's a story in Plato's Symposium about how people once had four legs, four arms, and two heads. The gods grew frightened of our power and split us in half and love is a way of reuniting with our lost half.

It's a lovely story, although, for those who are into polyamory, it raises an interesting question: were they once beings with three or more heads? "

" Interesting question Nice. I would say that it doesn't necessarily mean multiple heads and/or limbs, I would say it yields itself to the fact that even if we did have 4 arms, 4 legs and 2 heads, we still had to mate to procreate. There would still be emotional and biological responses to other beings. Perhaps love has always been a way to unite. Further, in this story I have to assume we were androgynous (sp?) and as such perhaps this is the root of bisexuality? Now that we've been "separated" so to speak, the desire is still there, only now the "heterosexual" bit is for procreation.

Very interesting though though!

Peace,

~A "

" That's an excellent point hlks!

I think that its the celebrities that help to drive the acceptance though. If we suddenly saw some bisexual male celebrities coming out, then some (not all) people would begin to see it as less offensive, more acceptable and all that. As it stands now, thanks to the "moral majority" and the "right wing" (sorry about that, as I said, I get passionate about this) its currently career suicide for a man to admit that he has sex with other men. That's the part I don't like. The double standard that exists that says its okay and even hot for women to be bi, but for a man to be bi, its abhorrent, disgusting and it somehow makes him less of a man. "

" So, my g/f saw how passionate I was about this topic and did some research while I was at work tonight. She kind of owned me. :-( Apparently there are more bisexual male celebrities than I had at first realized. Marlon Brando was on that list. This I found to be very impressive. Also, she gave me a link to a very interesting blog I thought I would share here.

" To add a little more to the story from Plato's Symposium, there were three types of people: those who were two men stuck together, those who were two women stuck together, and those who were man and woman stuck together. So there were androgynous beings. It's an interesting thought, but it seems very limiting--it seems to only explain being gay, lesbian, or straight. And even most people who are monogamous like to have friends outside their relationship, and it doesn't explain that either.

It's fascinating to know there are some bisexual celebrities, including Marlon Brando. Brando? Really? He could have been somebody, he could have been a contender...

I think things are changing. It's not the career suicide that it used to be, although I think it says something that, for example, Adam Lambert waited until after American Idol was over to officially admit he was gay even though it was pretty obvious. There are gay male celebrities who are out and proud. Still I haven't seen any male celebrity with the level of exposure that Angelina Jolie or Fergie have come out and say he's bisexual. "

" Yes, and that lends itself to the fact that it is more acceptable to be gay than bi. Which is something else I have a lot of trouble with. "

" Message for Whisper in avacum, what about Duncan James from Blue he came out as being bi sexual, I saw it in a magazine last week. He was sick of hiding who he really is and said he is proud of who he is. So there you go and wow he is gorgeous! "
