Is there any advice you can give me on how to make a relationship work when one person is Bi-polar and the other "normal" but a little insecure?
I really care about this person and I want to do everything I can not to disappoint him. Posted on 07/01/09, 12:07 am |

First of all he needs to understand what bipolar disorder is. You need to educate him on it throughly if you want him to understand why your okay one second and pissed off and grumpy the next. Otherwise this relationship may never last.
I know how you feel not completely but in a way since my boyfriend knows what it is. If he can't take you for who you are than he's not for you. I'm sure he'll understand since this is not your fault. Talk to him.

i agree.
educated boyfriends are the way to go. my boyfriend has done so much research on how to help me and he does a great job because he just wants to make me feel happy and better about life. i know plenty well about people not understanding. even my previous boyfriend had depression and he didn't understand. it takes a very strong person to be able to help and understand bipolar disorder and not resent us for it, but there are definitely good people out there. just don't be with someone who brings you down. you need to be lifted up as much as possible. you and all of us deserve it. good luck with him. 8]

I am having a similar problem. The hard part is I'm just learning about being bipolar so its difficult to explain it. My boyfriend doesnt really understand it and I am starting to pressure myself into trying to explain it perfectly. And that is becomng overwhellming on its own level.

My ex boyfriend was awesome when I told him, he did a ton of research and was really great about watching me and helping through bad times and encouraging me to stay on meds, not drink, not have so much caffiene, ect.
Sometimes it can definetly put strain on the relationship, but usually can be worked through and if you have a blow out or something that might have hurt him just wait till you are back in control and explain it to him and apologize if needed and I'm sure he will be understanding if he accepts you. He was a little insecure too, and I really think he suffers from some depression which can complicate the situation in trying to take care of yourself and lift up this other person, but if you are both commited and educated on it I think you will work out fine. And if he can't accept your situation and be a positive influence then he really isn't the right guy to be with! I hope everything works out, it worked great for me and my guy just decided to mutually go back to being the good friends we were before dating due to big life changes and moves coming up for us.
