Hey, new here :):)
Ok so I found this site yesterday and I'm posting today because I have a big problem: I can't concentrate!! I've been trying for hrs. I have all this homework to do and 3 major tests to study for and I can hardly get anything done. I just feel so awful (which is how I felt all day) and now my anxiety is killing me. Its late already and I kno since I'm bipolar getting my sleep is very important but, seriously, I strongly doubt I'll be getting any sleep tonight. I can't sleep when I feel like this. I could stay up for days. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanx. Posted on 10/27/09, 11:10 pm |

Sounds like you're under a lot of stress. Just take deep breaths, take lil breaks, and keep in mind no matter how bad you fuck up, you'll have bigger fuck ups later that will make this all seem like nothing in comparison :P
An awesome thing about high school (I'm assuming you're in h/s) is even if you flunk every class, you have the opportunities to make it up: summer school, alternative school, talking to the teachers and principal about your issues so they cut you some slack. Even in college, I sat down with a few teachers and explained to them my problems, and every one of them was caring enough to let some things slide. As long as they see you're making the effort, they tend to be forgiving. It's the kids that just don't give a fuck that they don't let make up for bad grades. Consistent deep breathing really does help. When your brain goes off track, don't get mad at yourself, just breath and say okay brain, this isn't that hard to focus on, I can do this just fine. Forgive yourself for getting distracted. Try to make it more interesting for yourself. Make sure you have a study space. All too often I'd have to leave my house, go to a cafe, and study there. Which is really weird 'cause the rest of my days, weeks, whatever, I wouldn't want to go in public for anything. People are weird, lots have issues that are undiagnosed or they don't mind or notice, so you're not the only one going through this. I bet you're not even the only one in your class with concentration issues, in fact, I gurentee it. Happens to everyone, it's just how you react to yourself that makes the difference. So meditate a little, don't think about what the future could become 'cause it ain't even close to happening yet. Tell yourself what's in front of you is all that truly matters, which sounds stressful but in a positive light, it makes it far easier than it's made up to be in your brain. Bi polar is such a bitch sometimes, eh? ^_^ No worries tho, you can make it through this and faaar harder/worse things.

My daughter is close to your age and suffers similar issues. The breathing advise is great and also, take a long bath and try to leave your troubles in the water. Focus on one thing at a time and try to slow your thoughts. It sounds a little silly, but the water itself has a calming effect and it usually helps my daughter.
Bless you Hun.

Try not to blame yourself for your distraction. If meditating doesn't work, try stretching, walking, or whatever to attempt to release endorphins.
Sometimes study partners can help. Try to do homework in sections, do them in order of priority then from longest/hardest to easiest and shortest. I hope everything works out.
