Dexedrine & Bipolar

How many of you are prescribed Dexedrine? I have been prescribed it recently by my doctor as it offsets the food cravings and grogginess that my Seroquel causes. It also helps me to focus and gives me a sense of well being as it has anti-depressant qualities. The problem I found with it so far, being new to it is that if you take the wrong dose it can cause Insomnia. At least for me but I suffer from severe Insomnia without it. I have spoken to a few Bipolars who can actually sleep on it. It's kind of a wonder drug if you are on Seroquel. The other side effect is that it completely erases the need to eat so you have to force yourself to even have a protein shake or something. It's also used for ADHD and the like, it seems to be prescribed for a constellation of ailments. I have tried Adderall but it does not have the same effect at all. Tolerance to it builds up quickly so you have to keep messing with your dose, that's the other problem in that if you do it on your own you can find yourself in trouble fast.

Just curious as to other bipolar's experiences on it.

" In another post you said you've been feeling manic.

Since Dexedrine is an amphetemine, that may be why? "

" I think it was more not sleeping than the drug itself as I have had an Rx before without becoming manic. "

" Just speaking from experience. Have been prescribed Dextrostat before (generic form) and eventually became manic on it. "

" Interesting. Had never heard that before... only that it's a generic form.

Good to know. "

" Your body can react differently to a med after taking it for so long in a totally different way than it did before especially if routes and times of administration are changes in any way. "

" I could be confusing dextrostat with something else, I do know that it has a quicker onset however that is a given since I am on the extended release version. "

" That's the other thing they are pretty easy to abuse. The confidence they imbue upon you and the appetite dampening effects are very addictive. Higher does give you more of an effect, I'm on a pretty high dose right now: 15mgs 3 times a day. "
