Excuse or Explanation?

I have Bi Polar Disorder, this is a fact, and I have done some pretty outrageous things in my life, some I don't remember. I have spent thousands of dollars on junk, yelled and screamed, attempted to kill myself, driven all over the country on a whim, quit jobs for no reason, stayed up for days on end, and slept for days. I take medication most of the time, and I have refused to take medication at times. I have lost friends, and damaged relationships. I no longer attempt to have relationships anymore as they tend to resemble hostile takeovers more than actual relationships. And so much more.
I have Bi Polar disorder, is this more of an explanation as to why I do these things or is it an excuse to keep doing them? (((HUGS))) Posted on 07/03/09, 09:07 pm |

I definitely say explanation though my father would say excuse.
However, we do have volition and should use it proactively and with consideration.

Excuse- If you don't do anything to try and stop them from happening again. If you refuse help, refuse to help yourself, refuse to apologize, refuse to acknowledge your triggers, refuse to talk to someone who could help- then That is bp as an excuse.
Reason- If you're doing what you are able to control, heal, help and stay level, then that's a reason. That's how it is in my head anyway. :)

My sister is controlling kind of like you in relationships. All she needs is someone who will tell her NO. So many people let her walk all over them. I however do not. It has caused problems, but I refuse to let that happen. I am not sure she really realizes that she does this all of the times that she does...

I think it is both an explanation and an excuse. I had a Bipolar friend a few years ago who ran around all of the time cussing everybody out and just treating them like dirt, then tried to always hide behind her excuse, "I'm Bipolar." I told her off.
