I have been taken off of Seroquel (because of cardic side effects) and put on Valproic Acid (Depakote). For the first time I took it last night. I have never had nightmares like it, I woke up and was hallucinating and was absolutely terrified. HAs anyone else experienced this? Will it settle down after treatment for a while?

I am on both of them. 1000 mg of Depakote helped me immediately. I have had very vivid dreams but nothing like an acid trip...and seldom nightmarish.
I just decreased the Seroquel to 100mg over time from 300mg. I experienced a disturbance of my sleep patterns where I had trouble going to sleep (even more than usual, I an a insomniac) and then did not dream during the first couple weeks of each decrease. A lot of weight gain for me also.60 lbs in a year!

I was on Depakote 9 years and had all the side effects mentioned here I was up to 4000mg at one point. Then I had the side effect so rare no one expects it. Acute Pancrititus. I was in the ICU for 14 days the infection spread to my chest and lungs. It started as a muscle ache in my gut like from doing too many sit-ups lasted for 3 days when I finally got an ambulance to take me to the hosp. It is good stuff as far as i am concerned much better than lithium but now I am on abilify and lamictal and even happier and I lost 85 pounds.

my dreaming has actually subsided somewhat, but I am not used to dreaming int he first place so was actually relieved to do so at all. The side effects I had the most trouble with was weight gain (which I have not been able to get around) and the breakage of hair. The breakage was managed with two things, both recommended by a doctor...shampooing with Selsun (not selsum blue) as described on bottle and taking the multiple vitamin Centrum Silver. Both have an ingredient whose name escapes me right now, but really worked. Cut hair to remove breakage and added fishoil to dietary suppliments and now have a full head of long hair again!

I see this is an old post but I thought I'd answer as well. I've been on 1000 mg of Depakote for 8 months now and I can say my dreams are VERY vivid. Not nightmares, per say.
I have not gained any weight at all, and I was hoping to, and just recently I have noticed a little bit of hair loss, so my pdoc prescribed a special supplement. So....all is well for now. xoxoxo Jen

One thing I have noticed is that my dreams have become more vivid and somewhat prolonged since beginning my current cocktail. I'm not sure which one to blame it on however since I began Depakote/Lamictal/Seroquel all at once. Sometimes when we begin new meds we are / can be quite unnerved so perhaps this anxiety is contributing. Changing meds can cause much stress. I hope this current regimen works for you. Be well and Cheers!
