I have been taken off of Seroquel (because of cardic side effects) and put on Valproic Acid (Depakote). For the first time I took it last night. I have never had nightmares like it, I woke up and was hallucinating and was absolutely terrified. HAs anyone else experienced this? Will it settle down after treatment for a while?

" I did have a lot of nightmares while on Depakote, if it's associated with it, I stopped having as many after a while.

I didn't take Seroquel long enough to have any lasting effects. "

" I am hoping that it does settle down. I only took it for the first time last night. It was like a very bad acid trip! I wonder as I have been on Seroquel for quite a while. I am being tappered off Seroquel, so I am taking both at the moment, but only 50mgs for the next week. That will then stop entirely and the dose of the Valproic Acid will be increased. I really liked what Seroquel did for my Bipolar, but the side effects now prevent me from taking it. We need to find an alternative, so I am hoping the Valproic Acid works. "

" Wow, I'd never heard of this side effect. I've been on Depakote 7 yrs and not had this problem. It had caused weight gain, though, so I'd like to switch meds eventually. "

" Hi Byron,

can you elaborate on your cardic side effects from Seroquel ?

I've never had any, but you've just made me a little nervous! I am due to start taking Depakote from Mon/Tue next week, but I think the plan is to keep taking seroquel for a while.

Seroquel does help me sleep at night. You take it, and it gets to the point where you can't fight the tired feeling. Not sure how well I'd sleep at the moment without it. "

" Geez I just started Valproic Acid last night 250mg. They are going to bump me up to 750 mg over a week. I am really worried about the side effects. I am still skeptical about being bipolar! "

" Man, I had extreme nitemares and a dry mouth where my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth. They told me it was a side effect of my Allegra D. Crud. Well, since then I am on Seroquel 300mg. I take one three times a day. They dont make me sleepy at all! Making me fat yes. But I can be freaking out in a traffic jam and pop a couple seroquils and calm down enough to start singing with the radio. When I say "fat" I mean I have gained 50 pounds now over the last several months! I wanna know about the cardiac part too! "
