SSRI and MAOI

This article seems to indicate that you should not take an SSRI (like lexipro) and an MAOI (like wellbutrin) at the same time. Also, it says my doc should have given me a list of other meds and drugs to avoid.
Any feedback here?

" First of all Wellbutrin is not an MAOI it's a SSNI. There are dietary restrictions as well as med restrictions on an MAOI For example over the counter cold medicines and the opiates such as morphine and demerol, taking those together can cause such a high blood pressure you could have a stroke or heart attack. Names of MAOI's are Nardil and Parnate. "

" ok, thank you. The article listed wellbutrin under the MAOI category. I wonder why? Maybe I missread it. It was listed a little below the MAOI's but not in a seperate labeled catagory.
So I don't need to worry then "

" Wellbutrin is a selective serotonin and norephinephrine inhibitor. The drugs make those two brain chemicals that make you feel good stick around in the cells of your brain until the brain has utilized them as much as possible. "

" I don't like to administer meds to patients unless I know what they are for and how they work because patients are becoming more educated especially with the internet. "

" correct....the 2 should not be taken in combination. If a person is on SSRI's and they are not working and need to be changed to MAOI's then they are to come off the SSRI's first....let their system have no anti-depressants for a period of time before moving onto the MAOI.

I found out after I had a very adverse reaction to 2 SSRI type drugs and asked my pdoc about it. "
